The basement I’d been living in flooded every time it rained. It was so frequent and so bad that I decided to look for a new apartment. But, with a tight budget, everything within my price range came with roommates, or lacked essential appliances. Or they didn’t allow pets. And I had a cat.

So when I saw a sign reading, “1 bedroom, affordable price”, I dialed immediately. The apartment was ideal, and I could afford it. Then I asked the question, “Are pets allowed? I have a cat.”

“Well, I like cats but I’ll have to meet your cat first,” said the house owner Ginny.

“Yeah, that’s no problem,” I answered. But it was a problem, a big problem. This cat had all the worst characteristics that cats could have. She hated most people. She bit. She clawed. She was, in general, a complete troublemaker.

We’d gotten her as a kitten from a shelter when I was eleven. She behaved well on the ride back home. But after we got home, she started to attack our other cats. And when that bored her, she clawed at the doors relentlessly. Worse still, she would attack people sometimes. The vet told us her offensive behavior might have resulted from being abandoned and attacked and any other sufferings she could have experienced.

My family started talking about trying to rehome her. But besides the fact that no one would want a cat with a bad attitude, I thought the plan was to give Patchy a forever home, which was tolerant and secure. So, later that year I moved out, taking her off with me to my basement (地下室).

When my potential new landlord said she wanted to meet Patchy, I prepared for the worst. But I had to try. “Patchy. Come get a treat,” I called. But it seemed that she’d heard the sound when I took out the cage so she just hid under the bed.

The Lost Dog

One summer day, I went out my back door and found a small dog sitting in the grass. The dog stood up and wagged (摇) his tail when he saw me. I touched his short brown-and-white coat and checked him for a collar or ID tag (项圈或身份牌). He had neither. I lived in a small town. I knew all the dogs in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen him before. I told him to sit. To my surprise, he sat at once. “Stay,” I said, as I made my way into the storeroom where we kept the dry dog food for our dogs. When I returned, he was sitting in the exact place where I had left him. “Wow! You sure are trained,” I said. I set out some water and food, and the dog started eating.

I left him in the yard and went inside to read through the newspaper’s “Lost and Found” column (专栏). Unluckily, nobody had reported a missing brown-and-white dog. An hour later, my brother came home and asked why there was a strange dog in the yard. “I don’t know where he came from,” I said. “But he is owned by someone. Maybe he’s just lost and will find his way home.” Later that afternoon, my brother and I went outside and found the dog walking by the back door. We played with him for a while and found that the dog knew tricks. He could sit, stay, roll over, and lie down according to instructions. He also loved jumping to catch a tennis ball in mid-air. When my parents came home, we showed them the dog and all his tricks. My parents were shocked by his skills as much as we were. None of us had ever seen a dog so well-trained before. The dog got along well with our dogs, and we gave him a comfortable place to sleep in the storeroom.

The next day, I checked the “Lost and Found” column again, also with no result. Then, I called the newspaper and ran a “Found” advertisement describing our new friend.

At around 6 pm, Jane and her husband, Charlie were driving on the road. They were incredibly excited because they would attend the dream wedding of her daughter Iris the next day. As they drove beyond a town heat their destination, the sky grew darker and darker and suddenly the rain poured down. When they were approaching a bridge,a wave of fast- moving water washed over the top of it.

Within seconds, the rapids had lifted the little white car into the river. It happened so   quickly that they were too shocked to scream. Finally, the car caught an object in the middle of the river.

Muddy flood water was pouring into the car and rising quickly. Jane knew they had to get out quickly before the water rose too high in the car. Forcing the door open, Charlie jumped into the flood from the back row. Meanwhile, Jane grabbed the front door handle and tried to open it but in vain."Try it again!" her husband shouted anxiously.

Hearing that, Jane took hold of the handle, using all her strength, and was able to pull the door open. She came out of the vehicle and finally reached Charlie, coughing and shaking. They leaned tightly against the back of the Car and screamed for help.

At the same time a truck driver called Joe was complaining about the bad weather in his truck parked in his yard near the river. He had planned a road trip.Suddenly, carrying over the roar of the water, he heard screams coming from the river and rushed out immediately, spotting a car in the river."I've got to do something,”he told himself. But how did he approach the car in such a complete darkness? Without thinking twice, Joe returned to his truck and drove to the river bank. Then he turned on the headlights and got a long rope from it.After that, he fastened the one end of the rope to the truck tight.
