Years ago, I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Los Angeles, handing out food. Once I got talking with Albert., a tall and skinny young guy in line. He said he liked my socks. “Want to see mine?” he joked, lifting his leg. He was barefoot. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach.
The next day, after work, I stopped at Ross and filled up my truck with socks. The following early morning, I drove over to Santa Monica's Palisades Park, which is a common destination for homeless people.
I took one of the bags from my trunk. It was still dark out. I headed for a group of three men, standing around a tree, probably using it as a windbreaker. Two were asleep under heavy blankets, and the third was digging through his collection. As I walked toward him, he watched me, perhaps questioning my motives. “I thought you guys might need some fresh new socks,” I said, handing him a pair. He looked confused at first but took them and said, “Thank you.” I gave him two more pairs for his friends.
I moved on. An hour later, I had given out all the socks. Most people were sleeping, and I felt like Santa. I knew that when they wake up they would find a very meaningful present.
That was nine years ago. Every week I’ll hand out as many socks as I can. If I’m on vacation or on a business trip for more than a week, I bring a bag of socks with me and hand them out to the homeless on the streets in other states and countries.
It’s extremely satisfying to operate “under the radar(雷达)” to help make some people’s lives a little bit easier. Part of me hopes to see Albert out there one of these days, but even if I don’t, I like to think one of the pairs will find him.

Ayna's quest to help animals began years ago after she saw a horrible event while on vacation in India at 9. "I was in a car with my family and I saw a little puppy on the road," she said. "She had a hurt leg and a car came by and they didn't stop; they just ran over her." Ayna said she realized then that she had to do something to help these animals.
At first, Ayna's efforts weren't taken seriously because she was so young. She was turned away at the first shelter where she tried to volunteer.
Now, her international organization is drawing lots of attention. Ayna was recently a member at the Just Peace Summit in New York City. The summit was the work of Three Dot Dash, a global initiative of the We Are Family Foundation. She was known for her work and taught how to better use social media and the Internet to help her work.
Her biggest reward, however, has been actually making a difference. "Knowing that one dog can produce 50,000 puppies in 10 years and that by sterilizing that one dog I saved many others is my biggest reward," she said. "Also helping them find loving homes is very rewarding!"
What does Ayna see herself doing in five years and beyond? She plans on going to college and graduate school and become a veterinarian to help further her work.
Ayna's organization, spotglobal.com, does so many things to help animals around the world but she also helps her local community by organizing things such as a dog walk-fundraiser to help with sterilizing(使不育) animals.
Ayna's number one goal is to sterilize over 50,000 animals and to establish an organization that will last a very long time to help with the problem. She added that kids can help by making posters or have fundraisers to help local animal shelters.

We know the closest emergency room and exactly what to do during a reaction. Our preparedness to guard against a worst-case situation felt like a win when the pandemic hit. Our everyday caution, which can be exhausting and make us feel awkward at social events, is now a great advantage.
As it turns out, COVID-19 life has had multiple advantages for food-allergy families like mine. Stuck at home with just the food we cook ourselves, we’ve been safe from all the land mines, like big holiday parties with boxes of walnut cookies, or Halloween, with kids eating Snickers while sticking their hands into shared bowls. Not to mention restaurant meals that have unexpected ingredients.
So the pandemic gave me a gift I didn’t even know I needed: I felt seen. The whole world was in prevention mode, weighing what might have touched their groceries or takeout food. We all wash our hands now whether our kids have food allergies or not. We all might call ahead to double-check a restaurant’s precautions and whether the chef wears gloves. I didn’t feel strange anymore.
Of course, the limitations on regular life will ease up soon, and families like mine will need to be on guard again. When I think about the new normal, I’m fine with that post-COVID-19 life. I hope we can keep this appreciation that not everyone’s immune system functions in the same way and some people do need to be more cautious. This makes me think of the classic home-design advice: “You need to take everything out of a room to know what you want to put back.” We’ve taken everything out of the room, and I hope we put back empathy, understanding and tolerance.

But I thought it was responsible for me to have a COVID-19 test. Shortly afterwards, the bombshell landed — my test result came back as positive, meaning I had contracted COVID-19.
I began to regret my own previous thinking that “I am young, sportive, and a regular marathon nnner, so even if I am infected with the virus, I should be fine.”
Undoubtedly, it was necessary to tell people I have been in contact with while being potentially infectious, and I did so. But I cannot deny, there was a moment of unwillingness when I felt a bit ashamed and anxious to make such a move. Knowing that it is COVID-19, I felt more of a psychological stress than a physical one.
But I was confident that I would be back at work soon. Sadly, that did not happen as the illness turned out to be more complicated than I had imagined. I felt extremely painful in my head. A few days later, I lost my sense of taste. Thankfully, it was temporary and all the major discomfort started to disappear after two weeks, and now I am recovered.
On reflection, the main lesson for me is to be patient and let the virus run its own course. And I realized that youth and fitness do not necessarily mean a quick recovery. The virus interacts with everybody differently.

“I hope he doesn’t ask me for any money,” I thought. He didn’t. He came and sat on the seat by the bus stop but he didn’t look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke, “That’s a very pretty car”. He was ragged (衣着破旧的) but he had an air of dignity (尊严) around him. I said, “thanks,” without taking a look at him.
He sat there quietly for a moment. The expected begging for money never came. As the silence between us widened something inside said, “Ask him if he needs any help.” I was sure that he would say “yes”. So I asked, “Do you need any help?” He answered in three simple words that I shall never forget. The three words shook me. “Don’t we all?” he said.
I was feeling successful and important, above a bum in the street, until those three words hit me. Don’t we all? I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those three little words still ring true. No matter how much you have, you need help too. However, no matter how little you have, you can give help too.

You wish you had a time capsule to go back and make things fight if you find mistakes. You fear what others will think about you and that they will reject and dislike you. You seek to be socially perfect.
Academically, you work long endless hours just to make those excellent marks. Although most would say "it's good to have high standards,"they have no idea about the internal hell you put yourself through to achieve perfection. If you come up less than your desired goal you feel as though you have failed, but you're far from failing, you just don't see it that way. So instead you are telling yourself that you're stupid, and not smart. The pressure you place on yourself weighs you down and you wear the "not good enough" label each and every day.
You not only have high standards for yourself but you also have them for others. If people don't perform up to your expectations, then you think them incompetent. This causes a lot of frustration because you can't trust anyone to get things right. So instead of being a team player you fly solo(单飞)and try to do two or three jobs at once. Your unrealistic expectations cause you to criticize and judge others and that leads to problems in other areas of your life.
The attempt to be perfect is called perfectionism and it's the unachievable American dream that's damaging our emotional and mental health. We strive for perfection with our body, in our performance, and in our relationships. In a society that overstates mistakes, is it any wonder that so many young people attempt the impossible task of being perfect?
We all have flaws, fears, and make mistakes, and that's perfectly OK. It's our imperfections that make life interesting and they help us grow into a stronger more adaptable person. We don't have to strive to achieve the impossible. We are designed to be perfectly imperfect.

Whenever I ask some of my French high school pupils why they don't go outside, the answer always seems to be one of the followings: sleeping, seeing my friends or playing video games. Of course, these are simply excuses. In their mind, going outside to have fun means costing a large amount of money.
Money isn't easy to get when you're young. While Christmas and birthdays can leave you much pocket money, it is a temptation to use it up as soon as you've got it rather than putting it aside for a rainy day. Actually, you'd better think twice about how to use it.
We can have fun without money as well. At weekends and during holidays when I still lived in Scotland, I loved nothing more than being out and staying with my friends and family. But I took full advantage of the swimming dance and language clubs that were on offer in my school and university. In France, most school pupils have Wednesday afternoons free. Some of them use that time to go to the cinema or do some shopping in the supermarket. However, most of them will have entertainment that doesn't have to cost them money.
A couple of weeks ago, I started a weekly English club at my school. I wanted to give pupils the chance to practice and improve their conversational language skills. I was a little worried that the young pupils wouldn't choose my English club, especially when the traditional Wednesday afternoon sports clubs and training sessions were available. However, I was pleasantly surprised that many pupils did turn up later.
Yes, we all need a change of scenery and a break from our usual routine from time to time, but entertainment can be simple, and it doesn't always come with a price tag(标签)!

Carbon capture isn’t new, but previous methods call for the gas to be compressed into liquid and then injected underground. Widespread usage of that technology has been locked by economic and environmental concerns due to possible leaks. Instead, in a study published in Nature Communications, the group details their sustainable and cost-effective plan for transforming CO2 into coal.
This new process involves a liquid metal catalyst( 催化剂 )that is efficient in conducting electricity. CO2 gas is dissolved in a container with some liquid. Once electricity charge is introduced, the CO2 begins to turn into solid pieces of carbon, which can be collected and stored.
What makes this particularly unique is that the entire process can occur at room temperature. Previous experiments have only shown a gas to solid conversion at extremely high temperature, which made it impossible on a large scale. Now, the researchers are hoping that their work will be used to create even further when it comes to carbon storage.
In an interesting side benefit, the solid carbon also works as an electrode( 焊 条 ), which opens up a world of possibilities. “A side benefit of the process is that the carbon can hold electrical charge, becoming a super battery, so it could potentially be used as a part in future vehicles,” explains Dr. Dorna Estrafilzadeh, a researcher. “The process also produces fuel as a by-product, which could also have industrial applications.”
1. What can we know about the previous carbon capture methods?A.People have to inject liquid to the gas. |

It won’t make up for weak answers, but it can communicate some positive things about your personality and what you might be like to work with.
· Blue:You can’t go wrong with darker shades of blue, especially navy. Choosing from this powerful color will project an image of someone who is in control. From the interviewer’s point of view, the color blue suggests calm, stability, trust, truth, confidence and security. These are all great messages to send without saying a word.
· Gray: After blue, gray is the second most popular color to wear for an interview. Like darker blue, it’s not a distracting color to the interviewer, which means they’ll be focused more on what you’re saying and how you’re saying it. Gray means sophistication (老成), so use it to your advantage.
· Black: This is a commanding color and represents authority. Black also suggests excitement, so use it carefully when putting together your interview outfit. You may want to use it as an accent (着重色) —like in a scarf or tie, for instance—rather than as the primary color.
· Red:This is an extremely powerful color. It’s so strong that you should only use it as an accent color. Reds are associated with energy, passion, desire, power and aggression. People think of intensity (紧张) and passion when they see the color red, so use it carefully or it could send the wrong message to the interviewer.
· White:White shirts and blouses are always appropriate. It sends the message of simplicity, cleanliness, precision and goodness.
