DEEP MAGIC FROM THE DAWN OF TIME

“Fall back, all of you,” said Aslan, “and I will talk to the Witch alone.”

They all     1    (obey). It was a terrible time this-waiting and wondering while the Lion and the Witch talked earnestly together in low voices. Lucy said, “Oh, Edmund!” and began to cry. Peter stood with his back to the others looking out at the distant sea. The Beavers stood holding each other’s paws     2    their heads bowed. The centaurs stamped     3    (unease) with their hoofs. But everyone became perfectly still in the end,     4    you could notice even small sounds like a bumble-bee flying past, or the birds in the forest down below them, or the wind rustling the leaves. And still the talk between Aslan and the White Witch went on.

At last they heard Aslan’s voice, “You can all come back,” he said. “I     5    (settle) the matter. She has renounced the claim on your brother’s blood.” And all over the hill there was a noise as if everyone had been holding their     6    (breathe) and had now begun breathing again, and then a murmur of talk.

The Witch was just turning away with     7    look of fierce joy on her face when she stopped and said,

“But     8    do I know this promise will be kept?”

“Haa-a-arrh!” roared Aslan, half     9    (rise) from his throne; and his great mouth opened wider and the roar grew     10    (loud), and the Witch, after staring for a moment with her lips wide apart, picked up her skirt and fairly ran for her life.

The more I learn, the     1     (well) I know how much there is still left to learn. As I journey through my life, I have become aware that     2     (acquire) knowledge is not only a means by     3     you can better understand the world, but also a way of appreciating how much, as     4     individual, you do not know.

So, how can you proceed? Firstly, lifelong learning is an attitude. Secondly, take advantage of opportunities for lifelong learning — for example, you could register online and subscribe to e-learning courses,     8     have become increasingly popular in recent years. Finally, understand that it is not sufficient to simply know something or to understand what you know, because for knowledge to have concrete value, it must be applied.

    9     summary, in a world of constant change, one should never cease to learn. Lifelong learning will help you develop your skills and further your career, and will boost your sense of self-worth and keep your mind active. Therefore, know what you know and use it; know what you do not know and embrace it; know that you will never know all there is to know and wonder at it.

I had a very special teacher in high school. Her husband unexpectedly died of a heart disease. About a week after his     1     (die), she shared some of her thoughts with us.
