I was twelve years old when I learnt to ride a bike. The bike was a birthday present from my uncle. You can imagine how     1     (excite) I was when I saw the bike, and I begged my uncle to teach me how     2     (ride) it right away. However, before I got on the bike, I felt     3     (extreme) nervous and I was afraid that I would fall off and hurt     4     (I). My uncle held onto the seat and helped me to get     5     the bike. While I was riding, he was running along beside me, holding the seat so I would not fall over. I was so     6     (gratitude) to him for his help.

As I was practicing, I became more and more confident. Then, I heard my uncle shouting, “ You are riding it by yourself now!”   I was scared. I was really riding by myself, but     7     if I fell off? Could I use the brakes to stop? As I was wondering about those, my uncle ran after me and got hold of the bike. I     8     (slow) down and came to a stop. My heart was still beating fast when I got off the bike.     9     (late) that day, having learnt how to get on the hike and get off it, I felt like I was walking on air! I am still thankful to my uncle for teaching me to ride a hike on my     10     (twelve) birthday.

I was eighteen, summer fading, when my parents drove me to my university apartment. It was my first apartment.     1     (walk) my parents solemnly back to their car, I noticed that my mother had tears in her eyes. I     2     (struggle) to hold back my own. Such a strong woman was she     3     it was rare to see such a show of emotion. At the time, I was rather surprised. Being the youngest of five children, I thought that my parents were accustomed to     4     (let) go. But maybe it’s something that never gets any easier,     5     many practice swings you get. As my parents drove off, I realized that they would return to an empty home,     6     all of their children leaving to pursue dreams and lives of their own. Their nest, full of love and joy for so long, was now empty. Relishing (憧憬) my new-found freedom, I concentrated on my college life. My parents did their best to give me space to learn and grow, even if I neglected to call or visit. It was a time of “firsts,” and a taste of first “lasts.”

I have recently been playing Travel Frog, a mobile game that has me emotionally     7     (influence). In the game you gather resources, send your frog on his adventures and your payoff is, *drum roll please* ... postcards. That’s right, postcards. I thought it was a silly, overly-simplistic game at first, but then it started to bring back memories from long ago.

While the game lacks the narrative detail or the interactivity of other games, you have a lesson     8     (learn) from your itinerant (四处奔波的) “Frog Son”. You do not control when he sets off on his adventures,     9     can you be sure that your hard work will land you a coveted (梦寐以求的) postcard. This game, however, has emotionally affected many players. They     10     (remind) of their parents who restlessly await their return home, their familiar voices, their love. Parents sacrifice a large part of themselves for their children. It is a sacrifice that can only be paid back with love.

It was her notion that boys my age needed "a good thrashing" when they misbehaved. These she administered with my belt, often for what seemed to me like small offenses     1     coming home late for supper because I was having a good time sledding on the hill. A man had a responsibility to meet his social obligations on time. Small as she was, she     2     still make the snapping belt sting when it lashed across my bared legs, but I hated the indignity of these beatings so much that I refused to satisfy her with     3     discreetly pretended show of tears.

My failure to cry during her "thrashings" fueled my mother's anger, and I knew it. Tears     4     (be) evidence that I had learned the lesson. My silent submission to her heaviest blows intensified her fury. If she had been a man she would have been able to make me cry for mercy, but because she was not, and because I did not weep, she struck     5     (hard).

I knew that faking the tears would gratify her and end the punishment, but I refused. The injustice and humiliation of     6    (beat) hurt so greatly that I deliberately accepted the worst gritted my teeth and, when the belt had fallen four or five times, muttered, "That doesn't hurt me." In these moments     7     we were very close to bitter hatred of     8    . We were two wills of iron. She was determined to break me: I was just as determined     9     she would not.

In the end she was the one who always cried, and then, when she had thrown the belt aside and collapsed on a chair weeping quietly, the anger and hatred instantly drained out of me, and     10     (overcome) with pity and love. I rushed to embrace and kiss her, saying "It's all right, Mama, it's all right. I'll never do it again. I promise, I'll never do it again."
