Still, the Parkland high school prom will be far from ordinary. Not only will it be held under tight security, but there will be a tribute honoring the lives of the four seniors killed during the February 14 tragedy.
With some students still saddened and emotions running high, local businesses, vendors and community members have come together to offer products and services at cost or even free of charge, in hopes of relieving students of their burdens- even if just for a night. The event should involve all the hallmarks of a typical American prom: eye-grabbing decorations, lots of flowers and a dance floor packed with students dressed to the nines.
The biggest contribution came from the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, which has donated a ballroom and catering for the evening. The money saved allowed the prom planning committee to charge as little as $30 per ticket- down from the usual of about $100.
Other businesses also stepped up, offering hairstyling, makeup, photography and even prom dresses. To help ease students' pain, Gabriela Miller, an alumni and salon and spa owner, asked her staff to donate their time and services to girls preparing for the prom. They enthusiastically agreed. On Saturday, Miller and dozens of beauty experts from surrounding communities will do hair and makeup for more than 230 girls.
Apart from business, neighbors also did their part. Shawn Rosenthal, who lives a few miles south of Parkland, felt so moved by the attack that she organized a collection to provide free prom dresses to senior girls. Within days, with the help of her friends, they'd collected more than 100 prom dresses of all colors, shapes and sizes. They caught the eye of the Alumni Association, which was also gathering dresses, and pooled their efforts.
Such a community effort could help the students “heal for a moment.”

Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers' report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”
In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

If you just take a look at the following numbers, the six degrees of separation idea seems pretty plausible. Assuming everyone knows at least 44 people, and that each of those people knows an entirely new 44 people, and so on, the math shows that in just six steps everyone could be connected to 446, or 7.26 billion people — more than are alive on Earth today.
But this idea wasn’t scientifically tested until the 1960s, when a psychologist sent 300 packages out to people in Nebraska and Boston, and asked them to use their networks to get them back to one specific target — a stockbroker (股票经纪人) living in Boston. They weren’t asked to forward it to him directly, but to send it to someone they knew on a first name basis, with instructions for that person to forward it on to someone in their network that they thought might know the stockbroker.
Only 64 of those packages actually reached the target, with an average path length of just 5.2 intermediary (中间人) connections, and this experiment was used as evidence for six degrees of separation, or the “small world phenomenon”, as the researcher called it.
But Derek Muller, a researcher, dug a little deeper, and found that, of the original 300 packages, 100 were sent to people already living in Boston (where the target also lives) and 100 were sent to stockbrokers who shared a profession with the target, so there were really only 100 purely random packages sent out. And of those 100, only 18 made it back to the target. “So we’re talking about a sample size of 18 — that’s all the evidence there was for six degrees of separation,” Derek explains.
1. What does the underlined word “plausible” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Reasonable. | B.Absurd. | C.Unbelievable. | D.Original. |
A.By entrusting the delivery to 5.2 intermediaries. |
B.By delivering it in person as quickly as possible. |
C.By passing it on to the target in the shortest time. |
D.By forwarding it in the shortest intermediary-chain. |
A.The concept didn’t exist at all. |
B.The experiment provided solid evidence. |
C.The sample size was too small to be useful. |
D.The experiment was carried out scientifically. |

Lead author Associate Professor Simone Ciampi from Curtin’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences said this easy, low-cost method of determining how to produce and keep the highest energy charge in a capacitor (电容器). could be of great benefit to all scientists, engineers and start-ups looking to solving the energy storage challenges of the future.
“All electronic devices require an energy source. While a battery needs to be recharged over time, a capacitor can be charged instantly because it stores energy by separating charged ions (离子), found in ionic liquids,” Ciampi said.
There are thousands of types of ionic liquids, a type of “liquid salt”, and until now, it was difficult to know which would be best suited for use in a capacitor. What our team has done is designing a quick and easy test, able to be performed in a basic lab, which can measure both the ability to store charge when a solid electrode touches a given ionic liquid—a simple capacitor—as well as the stability of the device when charged.
“The simplicity this test means anyone can apply it without the need for expensive equipment. Using this method, researchers found that charging the device for 60 seconds produced a full charge, which did not ‘leak’ (渗漏) and begin to diminish for at least four days,” Mr Belotti said.
The next step is to use this new screening method to find ionic liquid with an even longer duration in the charged state and larger energy density.

Evolution (进化) plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Konrad Lorenz, human attraction to childish features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure that adults care for their young, guaranteeing the survival of their species. Odd-looking animals such as blobfish, pugs, and bulldogs all share these childish qualities that initiate an affectionate response among humans. And these childish characteristics increase a person’s “protective behavior, attention and willingness to care” for the individual and reduce the “likelihood of attacks towards a child”, says Marta Borgi, a researcher.
Ugly animals often have other value—some, like the blobfish or the naked mole rat, live in extreme environments that they have adapted to in remarkable ways. Scientists are keen to study these animals to understand whether their biology might provide fresh insights that could lead to treatments for human health conditions such as cancer, heart disease and other deadly diseases.
Our fascination with ugly-cute animals can also be traced back to culturally-based causes. “The ugly-cute thing is very fashionable,” says Rowena Packer, a lecturer of animal behavior. “This is partly driven by social media, with many influential people showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on the Internet,” she says.
But there are some serious welfare concerns around this trend. Vets are urging people not to choose a flat-faced dog, because they suffer from serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs which have been selectively produced experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin infections and eye diseases.
We may want to rethink our love for “ugly-cute” animals because of their silly features like protruding (鼓出的) eyes and wrinkly faces.
1. Why do people like ugly animals according to Konrad Lorenz?A.People appriciate their efforts to survive. | B.People appreciate their super adaptability. |
C.People are attracted by their childish looks. | D.People are fond of their fast response speed. |
A.What media are changing people. | B.How public practices influence people. |
C.Whether social media is worth believing. | D.Why celebrities show off their pet animals. |
A.Opposed. | B.Supportive. | C.Indifferent. | D.Cautious. |
A.By quoting different researchers’ findings. | B.By showing some examples of keeping pets. |
C.By observing people’s behavior towards animals. | D.By referring to authoritative evolutionary theory. |
