Perhaps there is no sport in the world more connected to sneakers than basketball. Many NBA players wear them to send important messages and showcase their personalities on court.
And now, thanks to a new policy, the NBA will strengthen its status as the most stylish sports league in the world. When the 2018-2019 NBA season kicked off in October, the NBA lifted its color restrictions on players’ sneakers. It is the first time in the league’s 72-year history that it has allowed shoes to be of any color a player likes, as long as no reflective (反光的) material is included.
In the past, the NBA required “uniformity (一致性) of uniform”, meaning each players’ shoes had to match those worn by the rest of the team. Their sneakers had to be at least 51 percent black or white, with an element of team color.
This landmark rule change is part of the NBA’s collective effort to support players “statements” on and off the court. “ More and more people realize that limitation of the color of players’ shoes actually constrains (限制) their personal expression and storytelling,” CNN News noted.
Sometimes a shoe was worn in a memorable game, or the design of a shoe has meaning for the player.
Before Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, nicknamed “the Black Mamba”, retired, it was said that he wore a new pair of sneakers to each game and stored his used sneakers.
Bryant brought the low-top style of sneaker with a Mamba print to the forefront in 2008 to symbolize the spirit of perseverance and bravery. In 2013, Bryant added nine red stitches (缝针) to the back of his shoe to represent the nine stitches from his Achilles tendon surgery. “It has become an attitude. That is my Mamba personality,” Bryant told Sports Illustrated magazine.
Kyrie Irving of the Boston, Celtics wears probably the most famous signature sneakers. Inspired by his mother, who died when he was four, he has a rose on one side of his shoe to represent her. All of his sneakers are also inscribed (刻) with the words, “JBY (Just Be You)”. “Just Be You is the motto I live by every single day, because I’m happy to be an individual. It’s a beautiful thing,” Irving told UK media site GiveMeSport.
There is no end to the stories about sneakers in basketball. It’s certain that they will remain a platform for players who want to use them to express their ideas and personalities.

“I’ve noticed that there are so many people wearing horse-faced skirts on the streets now, from young women to children; it’s unbelievable, ” said Wang Zicheng, a 23-year-old hanfu enthusiast.
He recalled that when he wore hanfu for the first time in 2018 at his coming-of-age ceremony, it was still a minority interest. Now, he is confident wearing it everywhere, even outside of China.
As hanfu gains popularity, traditional attire (服装) and modern fashion are merging (融合), influencing not only clothing styles but also cultural perceptions and people’s understanding.
Some hanfu enthusiasts argue that each design and structural form of hanfu carries distinct historical and cultural significance, insisting that these details should be adhered to (遵循) strictly. However, other consumers prioritize the aesthetics (美学) and comfort of the clothing.
Zhou Shuang, 37, specializes in character styling for film and television. She pointed out that for those unfamiliar with traditional clothing culture, it’s understandable for them to desire a mixture of classical elegance with modern fashion.
This combination is referred to as the neo-Chinese style. “Neo-Chinese style clothing design doesn’t merely layer traditional elements, but combines modernity and tradition naturally,” explained Zhou. “It aims to showcase traditional charm that resonates with (与……产生共鸣) the aesthetic preferences of today’s Chinese. ”
Despite the growing hanfu trend in China, there remains a lack of understanding among people abroad. According to Wang, he traveled to a dozen countries while wearing hanfu.
“They guessed about the origin of my clothes…, but none correctly identified that it’s from China,” Wang said. He believed this is because people in other countries have few chances to see authentic hanfu clothes and accessories.
A potential solution could be integrating hanfu into everyday attire. Indeed, Zhou’s students are currently exploring ways to preserve hanfu’s cultural heritage while accommodating the demands of daily fashion choices.

The four parts are often linked by “themes” — repeated musical ideas that tie the whole piece together.
When Beethoven died in 1827, he had some ideas for a 10th Symphony. But all that he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few “sketches” — short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal: to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony, they wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write. That’s where deep learning came in. Deep learning — sometimes called Artificial Intelligence (AI) — describes computer programs that sort deeply through huge amounts of information. This allows them to find patterns humans may not have noticed. The programs can then use those patterns in new and surprising ways.
To train an AI to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand.
By feeding the program all of Beethoven’s music, the AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he re-used simple melodies all through a piece to create a theme, or how he moved between different parts of the symphony.
Other members of the team studied Beethoven’s notes and sketches, and worked to figure out what Beethoven was planning to do. Where in the symphony did he plan to use each little bit of music that he left?
________. They played a few minutes of music created by the AI for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts the AI made up.
Finally, the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony. Not simply a melody, but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra — a large group of musicians playing everything from string instruments, like violins, to trumpets, flutes, drums, and piano. So Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might have written, if he’d had the chance.
1. What does “That” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.How to improve Beethoven’s symphonies. |
B.How to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday. |

Peptoc is an art project created by teachers Asherah Weiss and Jessica Martin of this school. Peptoc is how Martin’s son, a first-grader at the school, spelled “pep talk”, which refers to a speech attempting to input enthusiasm and determination in a team.
The project consists of student-made motivational flyers (海报), and a hotline with pre-recorded pep talks and life advice from kids aged 5 — 12.
Dial 707-998-8410 and you will be greeted with the following message: “If you’re feeling mad, depressed or nervous, press one. If you need words of encouragement and life advice, press two. If you need a pep talk from kindergarteners, press three. If you need to hear kids laughing with delight, press four.”
Since its launch last month, the hotline has been receiving up to 9,000 calls per hour. Martin said she had signed up for the cheapest hotline provider she could find, thinking the kids would be excited to hear 100 people had called in a month. “And then two days later, we’re getting 500 an hour, and now we’re getting 9,000 an hour.”
Patients at Johns Hopkins Medical Center had been regularly calling the hotline. Rima Meechan, the school’s principal, heard from a woman with cancer who called during her treatment. Weiss said she had seen the school’s office manager in tears on the phone with the administrator of an elder care facility, where most patients are over 90 years old. The administrator was calling to thank all of the kids, because he played it for everyone who was part of that facility, and he said, “I haven’t heard laughter like that from them in years.”
Weiss and Martin said it’s more than just the messages. “Adults support children, but we don’t really celebrate how much they support us,” Martin said, “And to be able to be consoled by them gives us great hope that maybe we’re all going to be okay.”

In 1968, social psychologist Robert Zajonc published a landmark paper on the mere-exposure effect. His hypothesis (假说) was that simply being exposed to an object on a repeated basis was enough to make people like that thing. To test this, Zajonc had participants read words in a foreign language out loud. He varied how often they read each word (up to 25 repetitions). Next, participants were asked to decide how positive or negative the meaning of each word was. Zajonc found that participants liked the words that they had said more often, and the words that had been read 25 times were rated the highest.
In the decades since Zajonc published his paper on the mere-exposure effect, researchers have also suggested several theories to explain why the effect happens. One of the leading theories is that mere exposure makes us feel less uncertain. According to this idea, we tend to be cautious around new things, since they could be dangerous to us. However, when we see the same thing over and over and nothing bad happens, we start to realize that there is nothing to be afraid of. Additionally, mere exposure increases what psychologists call “perceptual fluency” (知觉流畅性). It is based on the idea that, when we have seen something before, it is easier for us to understand and interpret it, which puts us in a positive mood.
While psychologists are still debating what causes the mere-exposure effect, it seems that having been previously exposed to something can change how we feel about it. And it may explain why, at least sometimes, we tend to prefer things that are already familiar to us.

But these buses, on average, use four liters of diesel (柴油) fuel to travel less than sixteen kilometers. When the school year began last fall, diesel averaged 55 cents a liter nationally. The price nearly doubled, to a dollar and 8 cents, by the end of school in June.
Bob Riley speaks for the American School Bus Council. He says fuel prices for schools are not much lower than others have to pay. As a result, schools are looking for ways to reduce transportation costs. Bus routes are being redrawn or, in some cases, canceled. Some areas are buying buses that use natural gas or other alternative fuels. Other steps include fewer field trips and less travel by sports teams. And some school districts may end any bus service not required by law.
Studies show that school buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school. The American School Bus Council says cuts in bus service are bad for children and possibly the environment. It says removing buses from the road will mean an increase in other vehicles transporting students. Spokesman Bob Riley says another concern is that reducing bus services might reduce attendance.
But it could also get more children to walk or bicycle to school. And that would surely make people happy at the National Center for Safe Routes to School. More kids walking or biking safely to school is the aim of a three-year-old federal program, part of an international movement. The goal is to increase physical activity and reduce air pollution. The United States will celebrate Walk to School Day on October eighth this year. But for some students, high fuel prices could make every day a walk-to-school day.

As the world looks towards a gradual move away from fossil-fuel-powered cars and trucks, greener alternative technologies are being explored, such as electric-battery-powered vehicles. Another “green” technology with great potential is hydrogen power. However, the major obstacles have been the size, complexity, and expense of the fuel systems—until now.
An international team of researchers, led by Professor David Antonelli of Lancaster University, has discovered a new material that offers a solution. The new material would be used to make molecular sieves(分子过滤器) within fuel tanks—which can store the hydrogen and work alongside fuel cells in a hydrogen-powered “system”. It makes the design of tanks far smaller, cheaper, more convenient and energy-denser than existing hydrogen fuel technologies, and significantly outperform battery-powered vehicles.
The cost of manufacturing this new material is so low, and the energy density it can store is so much higher, that the hydrogen fuel cell systems cost five times less than ordinary batteries as well as providing a much longer range—potentially enabling journeys up to around four or five times longer between fill-ups.
The new material makes the cooling system unnecessary. This is crucial because it means cooling equipment does not need to be used in vehicles, resulting in systems with the potential to be far more efficient than existing designs.
Although vehicles, including cars and heavy goods vehicles, are the most obvious application, this material can also be used in portable devices such as drones or within mobile chargers so people could go on week-long camping trips without having to recharge their devices. It could also be used to run a house or a remote neighborhood off a fuel cell.
