We spend a lot of time sleeping at night and being active during the day. This is our second nature. That’s because we’re under the control of the body clocks inside nearly every cell. Also, our mood, strength, hormone levels, body temperature, metabolism and even the risk of a heart attack are all changing all the time every day. Our body clocks, however, are not controlled by cogs and pendulums. Instead, it’s the gene activity over 24 hours that keeps our body’s time. Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael Young from the USA found these genes.
Dr. Michael Hastings, a circadian rhythm (昼夜节律) scientist in Cambridge, said more attention should be paid to this discovery.
Nobody now doubts the importance of our body clocks. Ask someone who doesn’t have a good habit of resting and working what goes wrong with his body clock.
Those who always live in this way may take the risk of having a lot of diseases, from cancer to diabetes, but understanding how the body’s clock works is also unlocking new ideas, like taking medicines at the time of day when they will have the biggest influence on the body.

In the middle of the night, Mary woke up. Heavy rain had started falling again, and the wind was blowing violently round the wall of the old house. Suddenly, she heard the crying again. This time she decided to discover who it was. She left her room, and in the darkness followed the crying sound, round corners and through doors, up and down stairs, to other side of the big house. At last, she found the right room. She pushed the door open and went in.
It was a big room with beautiful old furniture and pictures. In the large bed was a boy, who looked tired and cross, with a thin, white, tearful face. He stared at Mary.
“Who are you?” whispered, “Are you a dream?”
“No, I’m not. I am Mary Lennox, Mr. Craven’s my uncle.” “He’s my father.” said the boy. “I am Colin Craven.” “No one ever told me he had a son,” said Mary, very surprised.
“Well, no one ever told me you’d come to live here. I am ill, you see. I don’t want people to see me and talk about me. If I live, I may have a crooked back like my father, but I’ll probably die.”
“What a strange house this is.” said Mary. “So many secrets! Does your father come and see you often?”
“Not often. He doesn’t like seeing me because it makes him remember my mother. She died when I was born, so he almost hates me, I think.”
“Why do you say you’re going to die?” asked Mary.
“I’ve always been ill. I’ve nearly died several times, and my back’s never strong. My doctor feels confident I’m going to die. But he’s my father’s cousin, and very poor, ▲
Then he’d got all the money when my father dies. He gives me medicine and tells me to rest. We had a grand doctor from London once, who told me to go out in the fresh air and try to get well. But I hate fresh air. And another thing, all the servants (仆人) have to do what I want, because if I’m angry, I become ill. “
Mary thought she liked this boy, although he seemed so strange.

Sports do us good in many respect. It goes without saying that taking exercise can build up our physical strength. There are many popular sports, here we will introduce some of them to you.
The World’s Crazy Sport: Soccer
Game in which two 11-member teams try to get a ball into the other team’s goal, using any part of the body except the hands and arms. Only the goalkeeper, when standing within the penalty area in front of the goal, may use hands and arms. The game’s first uniform set of rules was put in place in 1863, when England’s Football Association was created. Professional leagues began appearing in the 1880s, first in England and then in other countries. The Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in 1904, and has hosted the World Cup every four years since 1930. Football has been included in the Olympic Games since 1908. Now played on all continents in over 150 nations, with over 40 million registered players, it is the world’s most popular ball game.
The World’s Fastest Racket Sport: Badminton
As far back as the 5th century BC, the Chinese were playing a Ti Jian Zi, or shuttle-kicking a game played with the feet. The shuttlcock (毽子) was there, but it remains unclear if it led to the game of battledore (毽球) that appeared about five centuries later in China, Japan, India and Greece. The battledores were the early forms of today’s rackets.
Badminton was contested as a demonstration sport during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Men and women compete at the Olympics in both singles and doubles. It is recorded that the fastest speed of badminton is 332 kilometres per hour which is made by Chinese double men’s players Fu Huaifeng.
A Small Ball Creates a stir: Table Tennis
Table tennis developed in the late 19th century, although it is still unclear where it started. In January, 1926, five nations-Austria, England, Germany, Hungary, and Sweden-met to form the International Table Tennis Federation. The World Championships began in the same year.
The sport is widely practiced throughout the world. Table tennis made its Olympic first appearance as a full medal sport during the Olympic Games in Seoul. It was never competed at the Olympics as a demonstration sport. Since the late 1950s, the Chinese have been by far the greatest country in table tennis.
There are four table tennis events on the Olympics programme: singles and doubles for men and women. The mixed doubles event is not held at the Olympics, but it has been an event at the World Championships since 1926.
