Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview—if it’s long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here’s how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn’t give you all the details (细节). It keeps you from spending time on things you don’t really want—or need—to read.
Skim—if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get the main idea of light reading (轻松读物)—like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
Here’s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep (扫视) them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we’ll get a similar idea of what it’s all about.
54. How many skills does the writer introduce to help us in reading?A.One. | B.Two. | C.Three. | D.Four. |
A.Read every word of it. | B.Read all the details. |
C.Pick up a few key words in each line. | D.Read the first and the last two paragraphs carefully. |
A.Previewing. | B.Skimming. | C.Reading. | D.Sweeping. |
That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal (正常的) life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and math.
To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic math skills. As time passed by, I made progress.
I remembered very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.
After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.
As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke(中风).
Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak and know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU(重症监护室) and finally out of hospital.
One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”
Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only math.

According to a survey, many peopie think genes (基因) and inelligence (智力) have something to do with students’ success or failure. But there aren’t any researches to support this opinion. And in fact, it is not right at all. There is one thing that can finally decide students’ success or failure. That is how they learn. A few students are clever and lucky. They find good ways for themselves to study every subject well. But others aren’t so lucky like them. They don’t find correct ways of their own and fail in the end.
To students, what is the best way to learn languages? Dr. Asher found a way called “Total Physical Response”. This was helpful to students. Studies in San Jose State University showed that if students moved their bodies when learning English, they were able to learn a lot more new words and grammar in a very short time. But if they sat still and didn’t move, they could learn less. And after a year, the students who moved their bodies when learning remembered 80% or more things they learned. But others forgot more than 80%.
Now you may know how to learn English. Keep moving when you learn. So when you listen to a story or an article, do actions as soon as you hear it. And you can imagine you are the person in the story or the article. By doing this, you can learn more English and you can remember it longer. The most useful is that you can use it more eaily. Stop your old method. Try this one at once!
61. What can decide the students’ success or failure according to Paragraph 1?A.Genes. | B.Intelligence. | C.The ways they learn. | D.Their teachers. |
A.For students to learn language. | B.For teachers to teach language. |
C.For parents to help their children. | D.For schools to develop. |
A.listening to stories | B.moving your bodies |
C.reading articles | D.talking to others |
A.I am the writer of the story or article. | B.I am the seller of the story or article. |
C.I am the character of the story or article. | D.I am the teller of the story or article. |
A.Ways to succeed in the future. | B.Ways to do much more exercise. |
C.Ways to write an article. | D.Ways to help people learn well, |

Are you good with money? Do you get pocket money from your parents or do you work to make money? Read on to find out about British teenagers and their money.
Pocket money
Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. They might have to do some housework to get pocket money, including cleaning, cooking, washing dishes and so on.
Part-time work.
A part time job is a choice for teenagers who don’t have pocket money or who want to get extra money. About 15% teenagers have a job. Only children over the age of 13 can work. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering(递送) newspapers, restaurant work and shop work. Children in Britain can work 2 hours a day at the most on the school day, but not during school hours. During weekends and school holidays, they work longer hours.
Bank accounts(账户)
Some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no age limit(限制) at which you can open a bank account, but the bank manager can decide whether to open an account for a child or a young person. Parents can put pocket money directly into their children’s bank account. Most banks have a prepaid(预付的) bankcard designed to young people.
Mobile apps.
Many companies have made mobile apps for children, including GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. Parents can add money to their children’s accounts and check to see how the money is spent. Children can choose to save money or spend it using a card. The apps suggest that kids from 8 to 13 can use the cards.
So, many teenagers are getting experience working part-time, dealing with banks and deciding whether to save or spend their money. These are all steps towards becoming a financially independent(经济独立的) person and making and looking after your own money.
