An elephant and a crocodile (鳄鱼) were once standing by a river. They were arguing about who was better.
“Look how strong I am!” said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree with my trunk (象鼻).”
“Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile. “No knife or tooth can cut through it.”
Just as they were close to getting into a fight, a lion happened to pass.
“My dear friends!” said the King of all animals, going up to them, “Let me know what you are arguing about.”
“Will you tell us who is the better animal between us?” cried both at once.
“Certainly,” said the lion, pointing to the other side of the river. “Do you see the soldier’s iron hat on that wall?”
“Yes!” replied them.
“Well, then,” continued the lion, “go and get it, and bring it to me, and then I shall be able to decide between you.”
On hearing this, they set out. The crocodile who was used to the water, got to the other side of the river first, and was soon standing beside the wall.
Here he waited till the elephant came. Seeing that the crocodile couldn’t get the hat, the elephant raised his long trunk, and took it down easily.
They then made their way together back again across the river. The elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile on the water and became careless. When he was turning around to avoid the floating tree branch(漂浮的树枝), the elephant dropped the hat and it fell to the bottom of the river.
After seeing that, the crocodile jumped into the river again, and finally put the iron hat at the lion’s feet. The King took it up, turning to the elephant, and said, “You, because of your size and trunk, were able to get the hat on the wall. But you lost it, and you were unable to get it back. And you,” said the lion to the crocodile, “although unable to reach the hat, were able to jump into river for it and get it back. You are both wise and able in your own ways. One is no better than the other.”

“I understand you had a party last night,” said Logan a police officer.
“Yes,” said Henderson. “Oh! I hope the neighbors haven’t been complaining about the noise again.”
“Not that I know of.” said Logan.” “But a young girl, Fran, who came to the party hasn’t been home yet.”
“Fran...”said Henderson. “Yes, she was here. She left early, as I remember, at about one o’clock. I happened to notice what the time was when she came to say goodbye. But nobody else left until about four in the morning.
Henderson looked quite relaxed.
“Did you know Clare?” asked Logan suddenly.
“Oh, God!” Henderson sat forward. “You don’t think ... the same thing has happened to Fran?”
“We’re keeping an open mind,” said Logan, watching him carefully, “but we’re giving it our full attention.”
“Well, yes. I can understand that.” replied Henderson, getting comfortable in the armchair again.
“So, ”repeated Logan, “ did you know Clare?”
“Well, sure. I knew who she was. But we never had anything to do with each other. ”said Henderson, giving Logan a big smile.
“Who else was at your party?” asked Logan.
“People from the university,” said Henderson. “Students, teachers.”
“David?” asked Grant, Logan’s partner.
“Yes, David was here for a time.” Henderson smiled again. “But he’s really a party animal. He probably left early.”
“What do you mean, probably?” asked Grant. Henderson looked at Grant. Grant was sixty with thick black hair and a large moustache(胡子). His clothes, as always, looked rather old: blue jacket and grey trousers. He didn’t like much of a party animal either.

Video glasses make people look cool in movies. Now, thanks to scientists, our life could be even cooler. Professor Babak Parviz of the University of Washington in the US and his team have created a kind of electronic contact lens (隐形眼镜), which could allow you to watch TV and see electronic documents and e-mails directly on your eye.
The new lens can be put onto your eye and taken away just like a common contact lens. It has several parts, including an LED light, an electronic circuit (电路) and an antenna (天线) that picks up power and information.
In order not to influence people’s normal field of vision (视野), the researchers have kept all the parts particularly small. Some parts are thousands of times thinner than a human hair.
Besides its size, another challenge the researchers face is that the human eye can only focus on (聚焦) things a few centimeters (cm) away. Anything too close to our eyes will become blurry. People can’t see the things near us clearly. To solve this problem, Parviz used a thin, special lens called a “Fresnel lens” to make things look bigger.
▲ In order to make people feel safe about the lens, researchers tested it in a rabbit’s eye and it turned out that it did not appear to cause any health problems.
According to Parviz, one day, people will be able to see all the information they need directly from their contact lens. We may even be able to zoom(变焦) in on far-away views when enjoying views outdoors.
Parviz is now also trying to develop medical uses for the lens. He is working on putting a blood sugar sensor(感应器) into it to pick up the patient’s blood sugar level and other important medical information.
32. Why did the researchers keep all parts of the lens particularly small?A.Because human eyes can only focus on small things. |
B.Because they hoped these parts can be taken away easily. |
C.Because they didn’t want to influence people’s normal field of vision. |
D.Because small lens can be used to make things look bigger. |
A.清晰的 | B.模糊的 | C.放大的 | D.缩小的 |
A.Has the lens been tested on animals? |
B.Is this kind of lens safe enough for humans? |
C.Can the lens be used by animals? |
D.Are there any other advantages? |
A.Wearing the lens, people may watch TV or read e-mails on the eye. |
B.People can see all the information directly from their contact lens now. |
C.So far, doctors have already used the new lens to pick up patient’s blood sugar. |
D.This kind of special lens can be used as a telescope in the future. |

Pine (松), bamboo and plum (梅) have always been regarded by Chinese people as the most beloved plants because they can all go through the cold winter days, just like friends who cherish the same ideas welcoming the arrival of the spring together. For this very reason, they are called “Three Friends in Cold Weather”, symbolizing the noble (高贵的) characters which are admired by Chinese people.
Pines are ever-green trees with strong vitality (生命力). They grow well even in cold winter. For this very reason, they are honored with a character of strong will. And they are also regarded as the symbol of longevity, which means a longer life.
