About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to make self-driving cars. The most famous one was made by Google in 2009. There are cameras and radars (雷达) on the top of the car. They let the computer in the car draw a 3D map of the environment (环境). Chinese scientists have also successfully made a self-driving car. The car made a trip from Changsha to Wuhan.

Is a self-driving car safe? A recent (最近的) study shows that robots make safer drivers than people. If only 10% of cars on the street are self-driving, they will save 1,000 lives every year. If 90% of vehicles (交通工具) are self-driving, 21,700 lives will be saved a year. But a self-driving car is expensive and each costs about $100,000. So it is impossible to be very popular in the near future.

For often, achieving (达到) what you expect is not the most important thing. Although you didn’t reach the top of the mountain, you got a lot on the way.”

It is true that not every goal will be achieved, not every job will end up with a success, and not every dream will come true. The most beautiful scenery (风景) is on the way.

New York is a very large city with 8 million (八百万) people. How do so many people move on their way to work or school? In New York you can travel by subway (地铁), bus, taxi and private (私人的) car.

The subway runs on the railway lines (轨道线) under the city. Travelling by subway is the fastest way to get around the city. The second way to travel around the city is by public bus (公共汽车). It is a slower way to travel. This is because the traffic is very heavy.

You can also travel around the city by taxi. This is very expensive, but the taxi will take you to the very place you want to go to. If the traffic is heavy, the taxi will be slow, too.

During the mornings and afternoons, there is the “rush hour”. This is the time when the traffic is very heavy with people going to and from work. The last way to get around New York is using your own private car. It is not easy because you will probably be driving during the “rush hour”. The best time to travel around the city is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., because it isn’t the “rush hour”.
