Jessica, a thirteen-year-old American girl wants to be a fashion designer when she graduates from school. She thinks her designs will be more exciting than clothes bought from store. But until this month, Jessica has never touched a sewing(缝纫)machine. After her first class, Jessica and six other girls aged 9 to 13 said that sewing is fun, cool and challenging. These students at Fabrics’ Sew Fun class show that sewing machine is becoming popular again.
“We’ve seen a lot of teens getting excited about sewing,” said company worker Donna Smith. “Some of it comes from the Project Runway’s TV show,” she said. This TV show is an exciting weekly contest to make a great fashion design. Every week one contestant fails the test and has to leave the contest.
The number of people who join sewing class summer camps grow 10 per cent this year. That’s good news for companies that make sewing machines and sewing magazines. The Singer Sewing Company sold nearly 3 million sewing machines in the United States last year. This is about twice as many as in 1999. Sewing machines have been around for more than 150 years. But they have changed a lot since your grandmother was a girl. Camilla started sewing lessons after getting a sewing machine for her 11th birthday. At present, Shanghai has 16 metro lines that are in operation, 414 stations, 676 kilometers long. Millions of passengers might accidentally be attracted and moved by some pictures on the wall or a nameless corridor when they gathered in this “underground city”.
The brick wall of “Shikumen”, traditional Shanghai houses, has been moved to “Xintiandi” Metro Station of Line 1. This thoughtful design has become a footnote for the development of Shanghai in recent hundred years.
Magic lantern, haircut, hawkers selling snacks...all these old Shanghai custom paintings are created by famous comic painter. He Youzhi, and these pictures are displayed on the walls of Yuyuan Station of line 10, reminding people of those long ago days.
China Arts Museum of Line 8 was opened in 2012. The whole station was in bright red. Besides the symbols on the walls and ceilings, the other design of patterns are also borrowed from some traditional cultural elements.
The Line 17 goes directly to Zhujiajiao. As one of the four famous cultural towns, Zhujiajiao has a time-honored long history. Chinese style grilles (栅格) have been used to make the ceiling of the station, and the walls are painted green and blue, the colors you can see in ancient China, showing that people are still enjoying their peaceful life in the old town.
The Natural History Museum Station of Line 13 is just next to the museum that has long been loved by kids. The cartoon designs of big whale, caves, dinosaur skeleton, etc. are used on the roof, so people’s imagination has been activated.

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and wellbeing among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom-made navigation tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”
“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”
Dr. Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.”
“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else, but surprisingly we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.”
“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”
