![]() The weather begins to warm up slowly in mid-to-late spring in Ottawa, while there may be some snow. Spring is a nice time to have a visit as the city is still free of summer tourists. Keep in mind that you are still likely to experience winter-like weather in March and even early April. |
![]() Thanks to long, sunny days and generally pleasant, warm weather, summer is considered the tourist season in Ottawa. It’s a lovely time to walk or cycle along Rideau Canal. It is also perfect for exploring Ottawa’s fantastic neighborhoods on foot. |
![]() The heat of summer tourism is winding down, and the weather remains pleasant. If you enjoy the plants in autumn, a visit to Ottawa means the chance to see the city’s leaves change colour to reds, oranges and yellows. Autumn is also a good time for exploring Ward Market, which is full of local products. |
![]() Don’t be afraid of Ottawa’s cold winters. There’s still plenty on offer for anyone willing to experience it. You can expect great snow to go along with the colder temperatures and less sunshine. But visitors won’t want to miss the chance to skate on the world’s largest skating area. |
A.in early April | B.in late May | C.in early June | D.in late September |
A.avoiding meeting too many tourists | B.exploring the forests with local people |
C.enjoying outdoor activities comfortably | D.watching the most beautiful sunrises of a year |

London is a huge city. In its northern part sits a small garden cared for by Albert. Born in Italy, Albert grew up watching his grandfather plant tomatoes and learning from his grandfather. When he first moved to London, his gardening place was limited, so he had to choose to grow small plants outside his windows.
That all changed a year ago when he moved to a house with an outdoor space. Even though it was small, he was thankful for this area and set to work, building a greenhouse where he planted beans, onions, chilies(辣椒)and so on. Using recycled plastic bottles as planters, Albert hung them on a wall, and everything else was grown in pots. Believe it or not, he was able to fit all of these in a shared balcony(阳台)that was only 16 by 26 feet.
Albert’s first crop this summer included 30 kinds of vegetables. He got over 75 pounds of tomatoes from just 6 plants and his 17 kinds of chilies produced 22 pounds of hot peppers. He has not been to the vegetable market since last March! He even started to give the vegetables away to friends and neighbors, even putting up a sign outside his house asking people to take them for free.
At present, his rooms seem to be filled with as many green plants as he has in the backyard! Many city gardeners became very interested in what he was doing. So he started a web page called Spicy Corner, where he shared his gardening tips. He got many city followers and hoped his viewers would also create small green gardens in the city. “City backyards and green areas help make the air cleaner and healthier for people. Gardening is really healthy, improves the joy of life, and helps green the planet,” Albert said.

Many people in Venice knew who Antonio Rossi was. Like his father, Antonio was a very talented glassblower. He made many beautiful glass products.
Antonio’s daughter Clara liked her father’s workshop. She loved to look at all of the beautiful and colorful products he created. One day, she walked into the workshop and her father was there, standing beside two glass vases(花瓶).
“Do you like them, Clara?” he asked proudly. “I have made them for Mr. Lombardi, the great writer here in Venice.”
“They’re beautiful, Father,” Clara said.
“I must go and get Mr. Lombardi,” said her father. Then, he left the workshop.
Clara looked at the vases. Beside them was a note. Clara read the note and smiled. As she turned, she bumped the vases.
“No!” She tried to catch them, but it was too late. They fell to the ground and broke into many pieces. Only the round bases(底部)at the bottom were not broken. “What will I tell Father?” ________________.
It was then that she saw Mr. Lombardi’s note as she looked through the glass. The letters were…BIG!
Clara picked up the other base and looked through it. It worked, too! The words looked bigger!
Clara thought quickly. She found a wire(金属丝)and carefully wrapped(缠绕)it around the two glass pieces—a pair of glasses was made in such a way.
As Clara finished, Mr. Lombardi and her father walked in.
“Now let me show you the…” Clara’s father stopped, and stared at the broken vases on the floor, “Oh, Clara!”
“I’m so sorry, Father,” Clara said in a low voice.
Mr. Lombardi looked at the two pieces of glass in a wire frame in Clara’s hand. “What do you have there?” he asked.
“I made it from the broken piece,” said Clara. “Look through them.” She held up the note for him to see.
Mr. Lombardi’s eyes opened wide. “The words! They’re big!” He looked at Clara’s father, “My wife can’t read my books because of her eyes. This will be my gift to her! It will be the greatest gift ever!”
Clara’s father smiled. “I don’t know how you did it, Clara,” he said, “but you made something very useful.”
Clara did make something very useful—she invented eyeglasses!

When visiting the southern Chinese city of Liuzhou, the first thing people notice is its quietness. What is missing is the continuous noise of fuel vehicles (燃油车辆) in most big cities. It is because almost 50% of the cars sold in Liuzhou last year were electric vehicles (EVs电动汽车), making the city of about 4 million people the biggest EV market in the world. Not only that, the natural environment of the city is also wonderful.

Liuzhou’s first move was to let people know more about EVs. SAIC-GM-Wuling carried out a free 10-month test-drive plan in 2017. More than 15,000 people took the carmaker’s Baojun E100 for a trial (试用). The trial was so popular that chances ran out within minutes, and 70% of test-drivers bought one of the vehicles. Wuling then studied people’s needs and driving habits to make improvements.
At the beginning, people had many worries about EVs, such as safety or the problem about charging (充电). In fact, it’s very comfortable to use EVs. Free parking and tens of thousands of charge points are on hand for drivers. People have realized not only does it save money to drive electric cars but also there are many charge points for convenience. Besides, the air is becoming cleaner after more and more EVs hit the road.
“Guiding people towards electric cars is not easy”, said Jochen Sicbert, managing director at JSC Automotive in Singapore. But officials of Guangxi are also trying to make the use of Evs more popular in other cities, including in other parts of China. “Cities should support the light-weight and small vehicles coming into the city as those vehicles can fit everywhere and don’t use too much power,” Siebert said. “That should be the future.”
27. What made Liuzhou lead the world?A.EVs’ production. | B.EVs’ sales. | C.City environment. | D.Population increase. |
A.It worked very well. | B.It cost Wuling much money. |
C.It was doubted by people at first. | D.It was carried out in many other cities. |
