Many people go to school for education. They learn Languages, History, Politics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, cannot teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or formulas (公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in History or a formula in Mathematics. But it is sometimes very difficult to use a formula to work out a maths problem. Great scientists before us didn’t get everything from school. Their teachers only showed them the way. Edison did not even finish primary school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The key to their success is that they knew how to study by themselves. They read books that were not taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of experiments. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. Above all, they knew how to use their brain.

Many years ago in Japan, a farmer and his wife had three children, two boys and a girl. The boys helped their parents on the farm. The girl was small and weak. She was often ill. She spent her time drawing cats. Her parents didn’t like her, so they took her to the temple (寺庙).

In the temple the girl drew cats all day long. The other people in the temple tried to stop her, but she didn’t listen. So they asked the girl to leave the temple.

March 25 is the 17th National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students. The theme (主题)of the day this year is to give students more knowledge(知识) about how to keep safe. How can you keep yourselves safe? Here are some suggestions(建议).

When there is a fire: Shout out “Fire”! Call 119! Try to find a safe exit(出口) and get away quickly. Don’t use a lift(电梯). Use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose.

When there is an earthquake(地震) at school:Stay calm(冷静的). Follow the teachers’ instructions(指导). Quickly move under the desk. Don’t jump out of windows or run out.

When you are on the street: Wait for the green traffic light. Look left and right before crossing the street. Don’t run across the street.
