Curiosity, NASA’s Mars rover (探测器), recently took the world by surprise. It took a picture of a small “flower” while it was exploring the surface of Mars. Clearly, it’s not an actual flower. But it could be a rock that had been created a long time ago. Back then, the Red Planet possibly had water on its surface. The effort of the rover could help answer the question of whether life ever existed on Mars and understand when Mars might have been most suitable to host life. | |
Saturn’s (土星) beautiful rings which are made of ice and rocks won’t last forever. Scientists say that they are slowly breaking apart and will totally disappear in about 300 million years. The rings now may be 10 — 100 million years old. According to The Atlantic, 10 tons of “ring matter” fall into Saturn every second. They all get pulled by Saturn’s gravity. Jupiter (木星), Uranus (天王星) and Neptune (海王星) also have ring systems. Saturn has the largest rings, though — the others’ rings aren’t as easy to see, they may have had bigger rings in the past. |

Confucius was one of the greatest teachers in ancient China who helped shape Chinese culture. He influenced Chinese education in many ways. But he didn’t usually give lessons by doing most of the talking. His teaching was done more in the form of conversations.
Throughout his lifetime, about 3000 young people studied under Confucius and they recorded his sayings which eventually were edited into a book we know in English as “The Analects”.
Confucius changed his teaching style according to the needs of each student. One day, one of his students, Zi Lu, asked him a question, “When I hear a piece of good news, should I put it into practice at once?” Confucius replied, “You should always first ask someone with more experience.” A few days later, another student named Ran Qiu asked the same question. To him Confucius replied, “Yes, put it into practice right away.” A third student heard the two conversations. He asked Confucius why he gave different answers to the two students.
“Ran Qiu always hesitates in making decisions. This is why I encourage him to move forward,” said the teacher. “Zi Lu, however, always makes decisions too quickly. Therefore, I want him to think twice before he does something.” See? ▼ And that was how Confucius taught his students.

Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you get down to the real business of work and study, one hour feels like a year. Why are we easily bored by studying?
It all boils down to something small and hard to see: dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is a “pleasure chemical” that makes people feel good. Our brains release (释放) it when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we are rewarded.
Similarly, our brains also release dopamine while we are playing on smartphones. For example, checking your phone leads to a 400% increase in dopamine, said US author Steven Kotler. But why? When we spend time on social media, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or who will comment on our posts. This uncertainty, or “the magic of maybe”, makes the dopamine system active. We get excited wondering if we have comments from our friends. When our expectations are met, dopamine is released. However, studying doesn’t provide such uncertainty. Without the excitement of “gambling (赌博)”, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that? According to Harvard Medical School’s Trevor Haynes, apps can become less attractive if we turn off notifications (通知) or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits on apps to avoid overusing them.
As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly and reward yourself for it, you could also explore interesting topics related to your textbook. Use what you’ve learned to affect the real world. This will make knowledge much more interesting to learn.

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” This is a common saying in English and it encourages positive attitudes and action in the face of difficulty.
Lemons are very sour and you would never want to eat a whole lemon by yourself. However, by adding water and sugar to the lemon juice, you will be able to enjoy a delicious drink.
Because of Omicron(奥密克戎), life has given you a lot of lemons lately. It’s springtime, the sun is shining and the weather is warm, you should be outside playing, but the dangers keep everyone inside. So, what should you do? Just sit there and eat lemons, or learn how to make lemonade?
Lockdowns(封城)are giving people the opportunity to do things that they didn’t have enough time to do before, such as reading, learning to cook, pursuing their hobbies and spending more time with their families. For younger people, the lockdowns have turned out to be an opportunity to learn an important life lesson first-hand: While life can be difficult at times, it can still be enjoyed if you have the right attitude.
There are some things you can do to keep a positive attitude. First, stay healthy. Keep regular hours: don’t stay up late or sleep too long. And do some exercise every day. Second, have a schedule — a set time for study, for hobbies, or just some quiet time for yourself. Third, be considerate of others. Your parents are likely feeling a lot of stress these days, so don’t make their lives any more difficult by, for example, complaining about the little things.
The pandemic(疫情)will eventually end in our life, hopefully, it will make you and all of China’s younger people stronger and more positive so that you will forever be known as the “lemonade” generation, and not the “sour” one.
