Huaping, Yunnan, is one of the poorest areas in China. However, one school there has made big achievements. Over the past 12 _________ it has sent more than 1,800 poor girls to universities.

The school was built by Zhang Guimei. Zhang began to _________ in Huaping twenty years ago. Many of her _________ students would drop out of school (辍学) just before they finished their studies. Zhang wanted to know _________. She learned that these girls were from very _________ families. They were asked to make money at a young age. “I really want to study,” one girl cried and told Zhang.

Zhang wanted to _________ this. She collected money and _________ the Huaping High School for Girls in 2008. It is China’s first and only free high school for girls. “You are _________ here if you want to study,” said Zhang.

It’s tiring to run such a school. Zhang is now in poor health after all these years of _________. She has to take many different pills every day. However, she still puts in all her time and effort __________ the school and the students are more important to her than anything else. Zhang is really like a beacon (灯塔) of hope for the young girls in Huaping.

A general was going to fight a strong enemy. He had only one-tenth the number of soldiers (士兵) the enemy had. Hearing this news, the soldiers were worried. They didn’t think they could possibly win. The general thought for a while and then had an idea. He told his soldiers that they could win the fight only if they followed his new plan.

On the way to the battlefield (战场), the general stopped at a temple and told his soldiers, “After my visit to the temple, I will toss (投掷) a coin in front of you. If it comes up heads, we will win: if tails (背面), we will lose. Destiny (命运) holds us in its hand.”

The general went into the temple and wished for victory. Then he came out and tossed a coin in front of his soldiers. The coin came up heads. The soldiers were amazed and thought they would win the coming fight. They fought hard and won in the end.

“No one can change the hand of destiny,” one of his soldiers told the general after they won the fight. They believed that the gods had planned for them to win the fight.

“In fact, it was not like that,” the general said, taking out the coin. The soldiers walked up to see what it was, but only saw a coin with heads on both sides. The coin toss might have been “fake”, but their confidence and courage were still real.

Recently, a short video has become very popular on the Internet. It’s about a girl dancing on the water. Her name is Yang Liu, from Zunyi, Guizhou. Many foreigners think she is able to do Chinese “Qing Gong”. Actually, she was standing on a single piece of bamboo. It’s one of the traditional folk sports—single bamboo drifting（独竹漂）.

When Yang Liu was seven years old, she started practicing single bamboo drifting with her grandmother. For little Yang Liu, it was a big challenge. The most difficult part was to keep balance（平衡）. But the clever girl gradually found the key to keeping balance. After years of practice, Yang Liu could not only stand on the bamboo, but also do some simple performances.

Yang Liu had ever learned dance. Then, she got a new idea to show Chinese traditional dance while standing on the bamboo. It would be a new kind of performance. Although it was difficult to min the two skill together and it was much easier to get hurt, Yang Liu didn’t give up.

Practice makes perfect. Finally she could dance on the bamboo successfully and beautifully.

Not long ago, she created another new performance, called “Ballet （芭蕾） on the water”, which was quite special. She posted a video of the performance on the Internet. Soon, the video caught a lot of attention and praise. There are more and more people getting to know her. “I’m glad that so many people like my performance. I hope the traditional folk sports will be passed down by more young people.” Yang Liu said.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.

One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (渠) and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they?” I asked, “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.

The canals ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. We came back home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.

Hanfu Is Making a Comeback

When Zhang Lingshan was a child, she would watch Chinese period dramas (古装正剧) on television.     51     She didn’t know what these clothes were called. She only knew they were from some distant past.

“When I saw it, I really liked it,” she said. “I was completely drawn by the beauty.”

“Of these clothes, and I even wear them on regular days openly. Wearing it in public can make people learn about it” Zhang told China Daily. “The return of Hanfu is not about turning back the clock.     52    ”

    53     There are Hanfu shops, designers and researchers, and even photography studios that rent Hanfu. In a recently published report by online shopping platform Tmall (天猫购物平台), more than 2 million Hanfu clothes were sold in 2020. If you walk through major cities, you may see a fan dressed in the sweeping robes, crossed collars (衣领) and wide sleeves (袖子) of Hanfu.

Many people like Hanfu because they see Hanfu as a way to celebrate Chinese culture and find national belonging.     54     A growing number of young people are now looking to the past for fashion advice. Christine, fashion researcher based in Shanghai, said “So it’s the confidence of the younger people.     55    ”

Safety has become the focus to us all. How to be safe at school     56     (be) especial important to us students.
