My name is Ryan and last summer my family and I went to an island for our summer vacation. There were so many fun and interesting things to do on the island, but my favorite was fishing. Every day, my mom, my dad, my younger brother Derek and I went to the beach. We took our little fishing boat with us. Mom didn’t like fishing, so she stayed on the beach and read a book.

One morning, while we were fishing, we heard a loud noise. “What was that?” I asked. “Oh, don’t worry, Ryan. It might be a turtle(海龟)swimming under the boat,” said Dad, Derek and I looked around the boat, but we couldn’t see anything. Then we heard a different noise, which sounded like an animal. “Look, Dad, there it is!” shouted Derek. It was a sea turtle and it couldn’t swim well. “Let’s go closer and see what’s wrong with it,” Dad said.

When we got closer, we saw that there was a piece of plastic(塑料)around the turtle’s legs. “Let’s help it,” I said. So Dad jumped into the water, swam to the turtle and brought it back to the boat. “There you go, little turtle; now you can swim to your family, “Dad said as he cut the plastic off. Then Derek and I put it back in the water. “I know! We should make a sign about not throwing rubbish into the sea, and put it in the sand on the beach,” I said. “I’ll help, too,” said Derek. “Great idea, boys. If we don’t all do something to stop sea pollution, these sea animals will die.”

1. What did Ryan like doing best?

2. Who cut the plastic off the turtle?
A.Ryan.B.Derek.C.Father.D.Mother.
3. Why did Ryan want to put up a sign?
A.To welcome people.B.To feed sea animals.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了如何成为环保的。

How green are you? Do you know how to be green? Here are some ideas for you.

Reduce means “useless”. Don’t waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary—or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.

Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don’t use a paper cup or a paper bag. Itˈs better to use a china (瓷制的) cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.

Recycle means “change things into something else”. Though it takes energy to change something into something else, it’s better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighborhood and take part in recycling programs. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.

So please remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了在美国和英国的孩子们庆祝生日的一些常见方式。

Birthdays are especially important to the very young and the very old. On their birthdays, people receive birthday cards and birthday presents from their family and friends. Children’s cards often have a large number on them showing how old they are. Cards for adults have pictures of flowers, scenery or humorous cartoons. Inside there is usually a simple greeting, such as “Happy Birthday” or “Many Happy Returns of the Day”.

In the US, children who have their birthdays during the school year take a cake to school and have a small party with their classmates. In Britain, children sometimes get bumped(lifted off the ground horizontally and put down again sharply) by their friends the same number of times as their age.

In the US and in Britain, the 16th birthday is called sweet 16. It is the age at which a person can get a US driver’s license, and some wealthier parents give their children a car as a present. At 18, in Britain and in the US, young people become adults and many have a big party. In most parts of the US, 21 is the age at which people can drink alcohol legally. In Britain, people celebrate the 21st birthday less.

Many adults dislike getting older and a few lie about their age. But in general, older people are now much more willing to tell others their age. You may see a sign by the side of a road saying: “Dave Ellis 40 today”, put there by Dave’s friends. At about 65, people retire, and those who have reached this age are called “senior citizens”. Few people live to be 100, so the 100th birthday is very special. In Britain, people reaching this age may receive a card containing a printed message from the Queen.

A.They are full of pictures of scenery.

D.young people must have a big party at 21
11. What does the example of “Dave Ellis 40 today” in the last paragraph imply?
A.The 40th birthday is very special.

12. If a person reaches 65, he can ________.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了人类的活动污染了地球,最后写道,现在人们已经意识到了这个问题,并尽最大努力使污染处于可控之中。

The earth is our home. We must take care of it. This means keeping the land and water clean.

Pollution is a “dirty” word. To pollute means to make things unfit or unclean to us. Pollution comes in many ways. We use it, smell it, taste it and drink it. Pollution is beginning to threaten our health, our happiness and our life.

Man has been polluting the earth from the time when he first made fire, washed his clothes in the river and threw his waste on the ground. When land was used up or water became dirty, man moved to another place. At first the problem was not so serious because there was plenty of clean air, land and water. There weren't so many people then and their wants were fewer. All the dirty things could be absorbed(吸收)by nature and soon covered over. But this is no longer true. The increase of population and development of industry have changed that. Man is slowly poisoning his surroundings.

Through the use of poison, man has polluted the land, killing the animals. By putting dirty water and chemicals into rivers and lakes, we have polluted our drinking water, killing the fish.

Our increasing population is part of the problem. More people, more waste.

Where is this all to end? Are we turning the world into a big rubbish dump, or is there any hope that we can get rid of the pollution? Fortunately, millions of people have been warned of pollution. Large numbers of people are now working hard to bring pollution under control.

13. The underlined word “chemicals” means _________.
A.study of gases, liquids and solids to understand how they are made and what they do
B.someone who studies chemistry
C.something which causes some chemical change
D.solid or liquid substance used in chemistry
14. Through the uncontrolled use of poison, man has _________.
A.made the drinking water dirtyB.polluted the land
C.got good harvestD.protected the animal life
15. From the sentence “More people, more waste”, we know that _________.
A.because of the increase of population and the development of industry, more and more waste is produced
B.we need more people, not more waste
C.there isn’t any hope that we can get rid of the pollution
D.more people have been warned of the danger of more waste
