In the past, man did not think about the protection of the environment. Today, the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources (资源) too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals (化学制品). Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful (强大的) machines to cut down more and more trees. We know that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate (速度), in a few years, there will not be enough food. What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops (作物) can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control. Finally, if we educate (教育) people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.

4 . There is lots of garbage (垃圾) in the Pacific Ocean around the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), which is located halfway between Japan and California (加利福尼亚州). However, how can this be cleaned up in such a big ocean?
A man named Boyan Slat took a swimming trip to Greece (希腊) when he was 16. The young man was shocked to see more plastic waste than fish in the ocean and decided to do something about it. That’s how the Ocean Cleanup got its start in 2013.
Slat’s group cleans up the GPGP using a floating (浮动的) plastic tube (管). The tube will go around the garbage and catch it. The plastic tube is 600 meters long. A big screen hangs down from it, about three meters into the water. Wind and waves will push the garbage towards the tube (fish can swim under the screen). Ships will pick up the garbage and take it back to the land to sort (分类) and reuse it.
The GPGP has about 1. 8 trillion (万亿) pieces of garbage. Most of it is plastic, like bottles and bags. Plastic garbage is very bad for birds and fish. They may get trapped or eat the plastic waste and then become sick or even die. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter our body through the seafood.
The Ocean Cleanup says it will be able to clean up half of the garbage in the GPGP within five years. If this first project works well, the Ocean Cleanup hopes to put as many as 60 more plastic tubes in the ocean. About 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. The purpose of the organization is to clean out 90 percent of the ocean plastic by 2040.

5 . Most environmental pollution on Earth comes from humans and their inventions, such as cars or plastic. Today, air pollution is mainly caused by waste gases of cars, leading to climate change. Plastics fill our ocean and create a serious health problem to marine (海洋的) animals.
And what about the electric light, one of the greatest human inventions of all time? Electric light can be a beautiful thing. It can guide us home when the sun goes down, keep us safe and make our homes bright. However, it has started to influence the environment. Light pollution, the improper use of outdoor light, is influencing human health, wildlife behavior and our ability to watch stars.
Light pollution is a global (全球的) problem. The World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness, a computer-controlled map, can show where our earth is lit up at night. Some of the most light-polluted countries in the world are Singapore, Qatar and Kuwait. And the most faraway places on Earth (Greenland, Central African Republic and Niue) are in darkness.
Sky glow (人工白昼现象) is the brightening of the night sky, mostly over cities, because of the electric lights of cars, street lamps, offices, factories, outdoor advertising and buildings.
People living in cities with high levels of sky glow have a hard time seeing more than a handful of stars at night. Astronomers (天文学家) are especially worried about sky glow pollution, because it prevents (阻止) them from watching stars. More than 80% of the world’s population, and 99% of Americans and Europeans, live under sky glow.

6 . E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.
Burying (填埋) e-waste or burning it causes serious problems for the environment. Electronics have dangerous things in them. These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.
As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste.
E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.
A.Change electronics only when we have to. |
B.We live in a society that is producing and using electronics (电子产品) all the time. |
C.In recent years, many countries have started recycling e-waste. |
D.Electronics are safe things so we don’t need to change them. |
E.Another way is to make producers responsible (负责任) for their used products. |

8 . On August 24, Japan started releasing (排放) wastewater from its Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (福岛第一核电站) into the Pacific Ocean. This has caused anger and fear across the world.
1. What happened?In March 2011, Japan experienced the strongest earthquake in its recorded history. The earthquake caused a tsunami (海啸). The tsunami greatly damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant. Ever since then, the plant has been producing a large amount of wastewater. So far, it has collected more than 1.3 million tons of it. The first round of release will last 17 days. The whole process will take about 30 years.
2. Two types of waterNuclear-contaminated water (核污水): The water has more than 60 kinds of radioactive materials (放射性物质). It’s bad for people’s health and the environment.
Nuclear wastewater (核废水): The water doesn’t have radioactive materials. It also cools down reactors (反应堆), but it doesn’t touch them.
3. ______It goes to the middle of the Pacific Ocean in 57 days;
It gets to China in about 240 days;
It gets to the US and Canada in 3 years;
It reaches everywhere in the world in 10 years.
4. The danger of wastewaterRadioactive materials in wastewater may cause many diseases. It will influence us in many ways: fish and other seafood in water may have radioactive materials; the cloud near the sea may have these materials, too. Since we are on the same planet, no one will be free from the harm. It is just a matter of time.

Recently, a professor reviewed the results from nearly 200 experiments. He found it would take over 100 plants per square metre to clean the air. Thousands of plants would be needed in a single apartment to do the job. I can’t fit that many plants in my place! So my four houseplants don’t give me clearer air,
