文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了电子垃圾的危害并建议我们正确处理电子垃圾以减少环境污染。

1 . Have you ever heard of e-waste, which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?

Most people just throw them away. With the development of the electronic industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste but only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second with 6 million tons.

It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine (城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic (有毒的) chemicals can get into the soil or air, affecting the environment and people’s health.

Apple, for example, now recycles people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can also take computers and phones to see if companies offer recycling programs.

根据以上内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。
1. Broken mobile phones can become e-waste.
2. America produced most e-waste in 2014 according to the United Nations.
3. The underlined word “affecting” means “protecting” in the third paragraph.
4. From paragraph four, we can learn that used electric products can’t be recycled.
5. The main purpose of this passage is to advise people to deal with e-waste properly to reduce pollution.

3 . On the evening of September 26th, the streets of Geneva in Switzerland went dark. This usually happens when there is a problem with the electricity, but this time the lights were turned off to allow people to go outside and look at the stars. This is often impossible in a city because of light pollution.

Light pollution is caused when light from streetlights or buildings makes the night less dark. There are many reasons why this is a problem. Animals sleep less because they think it is still the daytime. Birds that fly to warmer countries in the autumn need to see the moon and stars to find their way, but light pollution makes this difficult. Insects and birds in cities often fly towards lights at night. They knock into buildings and die.

Light pollution is also bad for us. It can stop us sleeping and give us headaches. Also, we don’t see the same sky that people in the past did. This means we almost never see one of the greatest scenes in the world; millions of stars. Hundreds of thousands of people have never seen it in their lives.

However, it is not difficult to do a few things to reduce (减轻) light pollution; we can all turn lights off when we don’t need them and we can cover our windows. If there is less light pollution, we will once again be able to enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

Nuclear power (核能) factories make power by using a special course called nuclear fission (核裂变). While this course is of great help in making clean energy, it also leads to a type of waste (废料) called nuclear wastewater. It has radioactive (有辐射的) materials. The nuclear wastewater from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power factory, called nuclear-contaminated (核污染) water, is the result of an accident. It is different from the nuclear wastewater and it’s much worse for everyone on the earth.

Japan began pouring this kind of water into the sea on August 24, 2023. Japan’s action came into the world’s notice, so people from different countries showed their ideas on it.

Moulik Jahan

By pouring the water into the sea, Japan is doing dangerous things to the sea and human health. Japan must be serious about it. But what the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) are doing is to tell lies to the public about their mistakes.

Kulsum Begum

Will Japan’s clearing machine go on working well over the next thirty years? What will happen to daily food, human health, and the sea? The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report did not give us answers.

Gabriela Berual

It’s important for the lives of millions of people all around the world. Scientists should make a larger number of tests in order to learn more about the pouring action. What’s more, neighboring governments and people should not keep silent. They should take action to prevent the pouring of nuclear-contaminated water.

Yu Hong

Nuclear factories usually use the clearing machines to make radioactive water safer. But some radioactive materials may still be terrible to nature.

Local fishing groups and neighboring countries don’t agree with Japan on this thing. They think that the nuclear-contaminated water may not change people’s life at this moment, but it may finally lead to serious problems if people do nothing to prevent Japan’s government pouring it.

8 . Looking up in the sky, you can only see one or two stars at most. This is because in 80 percent of the world, light pollution is turning night into day.

When artificial light (人造光) and natural light mix together, insects, birds and even plants are affected seriously. A 2022 report surveyed more than 160 species (物种) to understand how artificial light changes ecosystem. The researchers found that animals watched the light of the sun and moon to plan their activities. Breaking the law of light can affect all kinds of wildlife. Birds are easy to get lost because of bright city lights. The short-wave blue light produced by LED bulbs (灯泡) will attract more insects and birds. Fireflies (萤火虫) light the forests. They communicate with each other through their own light, but artificial light mixes the messages they want to express, making it harder for them to live.

Unlike air and water pollution, light pollution can be solved immediately. Reducing light pollution is simple by turning off the lights, limiting the time on or reducing the light from a single bulb.

Asalam, a scientist, said, “The type of light that we use is very important. For birds, if you use warmer, yellow light, you won’t have so much effect on them.”

Street lights and outdoor lights with lampshades (灯罩) can concentrate light directly where we need it, preventing them from leaking (泄露) outward or upward.

Closing your blinds (百叶窗) and closing the curtains will prevent artificial light from entering the environment. A study found that simply halving the light outside the window reduced the birds’ effects by 60 percent.

In order to protect our friends living on the same earth, please let our city be dark.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

Forks made out of potatoes might sound strange, but they could be key to protecting the world!

Pontus, a Swedish engineering student, has invented a new type of plastic (塑料) made from potato starch (淀粉) and water. It can be used instead of single-use plastic to make plastic straws and cutlery (餐具). The invention got the James Dyson Award, a competition to find amazing inventions across the world.

Single-use plastic is a real problem for our planet. Humans produce around 300 million tonnes of plastic each year. That’s about the same weight as all adult humans on the planet. This plastic is bad for wildlife and the environment. It can take hundreds of years to decompose (分解) and it pollutes the world’s oceans.

The new ‘potato plastic’ could replace normal plastic. It decomposes after only two months. Maybe, one day soon, we will see all single-use plastic replaced by ‘potato plastic’!
