Would you like to have a brother or a sister? Years ago this might have sounded impossible to many. But since several years ago with the end of China’s “one-child policy(政 策)”, this could actually happen now. All Chinese couples are allowed to have two children. It means that many Chinese children may have siblings(兄弟姐妹) in the future.
What would it be like growing up with a brother or a sister? Having a sibling can stop children from bad feelings, according to Laura Padilla-Walker, a teacher from Brigham Young University, US. “Siblings give children something that parents can’t, ” she said. You may not feel lonely at home any more because there is someone to play with you. You can also share secrets with him or her.
“But children with siblings also have to learn to control their feeling, ” said Padilla-Walker. You need to share things with them, such as attention from parents, toys, the bathroom and the TV. There are also unpleasant situations such as competition, name-calling and even hair-pulling.
Even the birth order of siblings could matter too. US psychologist Kevin Leman said that birth order decides the way parents treat their children, thus causing different personalities between siblings.
Leman explained that parents are usually stricter with their first child. So firstborns may be perfect because parents set high goals for them. They usually act well and hope to succeed. When the couple has a second child, they have fewer rules. So late born children are usually more creative. They also love attention. It is said that many of them also have a good sense of humor.

When Chinese shooter Pang Wei got his 10-meter air pistol (气手枪) mixed team gold medal (金牌) in 2020 Tokyo Olympics, his thoughts might have traveled back to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. That summer, the quiet man won the first prize in the men’s 10-meter air pistol event when he first went to the Olympic Games.
Born in July 1986 in Baoding of North China’s Hebei Province, Pang Wei became interested in toy guns when he was a little boy. His life changed in 2000 when a neighbor saw his toy guns as if in a weapon warehouse (武器仓库), and joked that he should take up shooting. The 14-year-old was excited by the idea, and soon went to a sports school in Baoding. The hard-working shooter soon went to China’s national team in 2005.
In London 2012, Pang finished fourth in the men’s 10-meter air pistol. In Rio 2016, he finished third. In Tokyo 2020, he got third again. Chicago is next to a beautiful lake, Lake Michigan. In summer Lake Michigan is warm and blue. People lie on the beaches and swim in the water. In winter Lake Michigan is cold and gray. Snow covers the beaches, and ice covers the water.
On a cold January day, a little boy and his father were playing in the snow on Chicago beach. The boy was Jimmy. He was four years old. Several minutes went by. The father still couldn't find Jimmy. Firemen(消防队员) arrived. Twenty minutes later they found Jimmy and pulled him out of the water. Jimmy was not breathing, and his heart was not beating. He was dead. On the beach paramedics(医务辅助人员) worked on Jimmy for an hour. He began to breathe, and his heart began to beat. The paramedics rushed Jimmy to the hospital. Doctors at the hospital put Jimmy in bed. They put him on a cold mattress(床垫) because they wanted his body to warm up slowly. They gave him some medicine because they wanted him to sleep. After six weeks in the hospital he got better. Then he went to another hospital. He stayed there for seven weeks. He began to walk, talk, and play again.
Jimmy was in the water for more than 20 minutes. He couldn't breathe in the water. He couldn’t get any oxygen(氧气). But today he is alive and healthy. How is it possible? Jimmy is alive because the water was ice cold. Usually the brain(脑) needs a lot of oxygen. But when it’s very cold, the brain slows down. It does not need much oxygen. Life is full of surprise as long as you try your best in the face of challenges. I still remember my music teacher Ms. Smith, and her words “Be a true winner in your own heart.” encourage me to improve myself in many ways.
I used to be afraid of joining in school activities. Once, our school had a welcome party for new foreign teachers. My teacher asked me to show Chinese kung fu. Though I have been learning it since nearly four years ago, I still worried about it, because it was the first time for me to stand on stage.
The party began with Peking Opera. When I stood on stage, I felt even more nervous. I worried that others would laugh at me if I couldn’t do it perfectly. I thought of the music teacher’s words" Be a true winner in your own heart”, and I became brave. Then I started my performance. Hearing applause (掌声) from the teachers, I knew I made it .
When I finished my show, I ran towards Ms. Smith, and I gave her a big hug (拥抱) . It was Ms. Smith that made me realize how strong I could be . The valuable (宝贵的) experience did give me a great lesson. It encouraged me to keep challenging myself to be a better man.
