Every time you eat seafood, you get red spots(红点) on your body. And every spring and fall, your friend gets a running nose when you play in the garden. What’s going on? Well, you and your friend may have allergies(过敏).
An allergy is a reaction from your immune system(免疫系统). The immune system keeps you away from diseases by fighting germs(细菌). But when you have allergies, it overacts(过度反应) and tries to fight against things like grass, pollen(花粉) or some food. This makes your body feel uncomfortable.
Allergies are common around the world. According to WHO, about 20 percent of the world’s population suffers from allergies.
Food allergies are one of the most common types. Many children can be allergic to food like milk, eggs and peanuts. If you are allergic to certain food, you may get red spots, an upset stomach or even have difficulty breathing. So far, people haven’t found any good ways to stop food allergies. Just do not eat those food as much as possible.
Seasonal allergies happen in most parts of the world. When spring comes, pollen is everywhere in the air. And some people begin to sneeze, itch(发痒) or get a running nose. When it’s pollen season, try to stay indoors. Pollen is usually at its peak(高峰) during mid-morning, early evening and windy days.
So how do you know if you are allergic to something? Skin tests (皮肤测试) are the most widely used ways. Doctors take a drop of different things that may cause allergies and put it on your skin. Then, they wait to see if your skin around the drop becomes red. Once you know what you are allergic to, the best thing to do is try and stay away from those things.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Would you want to be a scientist or an artist? According to the research, the order of the birth in your family may affect(影响)your choice of job. Birth order can affect people’s behavior(行为)and shape(塑造)their personalities.
A group of scientists studied 500 people from 11 different career groups. They found that older children are more likely to become astronauts and scientists. NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and British scientist Stephen Hawking are both the oldest children in their families. The reason is probably that parents usually treat older children more strictly than younger children. This gives the older children a more disciplined personality(性格).
The scientists also found that middle children are 30 percent more likely to become CEOs than their brothers and sisters. The scientists said the reason could be that middle children need to do more to get attention from their parents. This makes them more competitive(有竞争力的) and better at communication. Mark Zukerberg, founder of Facebook, and Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft , are both middle children.
Younger children, on the other hand, tend to be the “softest”. They learn to pay attention to other people’s thoughts. This makes them sensitive to others’ feelings. Therefore, younger children are more likely to become musicians. German musician Johann Bach and Austrian composer(作曲家) Wolfgang Moszart are both the youngest children in their families.
The results of the study also suggested that the only children are more likely to become artists. They get full attention from their parents and are freer to develop themselves. This makes them more creative and confident.
70. How many career groups are studied from a group of scientists?71. What are the middle children usually like?
72. What does the underlined word “sensitive” mean in Chinese?
73. According to the passage, why are the only children more likely to become artists?
