“You have saved my horse,” Queen Olivia told the young boy who was standing before her. “Now you can have a prize.” Peter nervously ran his fingers through his brown hair. The frightened horse ran past him when he worked in the field that morning. He would have helped it whether it belonged to the queen or not. But he had to admit that getting a prize was nice. Two of the queen’s pages (侍从) appeared. One carried a small pillow with a mirror on the top. Red jewels were shining (闪耀) on the top of the mirror’s silver fame (镜框). The other page carried a wood cage with a clucking (咯咯叫) chicken inside it.
“Only one prize can be yours,” The queen said. “Choose wisely.” “That’s easy,” Peter said, “I’ll take the chicken.” Some of the people in the court laughed. It was clear that they thought he had made a foolish choice.
“And why did you choose the chicken?” the queen asked. “Well, I don’t know much about jewels,” Peter answered. “But I do know about chickens. The chicken will provide eggs family for a long while.”
Queen Olivia smiled. “Then you did make a wise choice,” she said. “That mirror may look beautiful. But the jewels you see are only colored glass, and the frame is painted silver. The chicken is much more valuable.” Peter took the chicken. Then he said, “Thank you.”
“You are a smart child,” the queen said. “I want to use a smart boy to help take care of my horses. Would you like a job?” Peter smiled. “Thank you!” he said. A job for the queen paid well. Now his family would eat well for the rest of their lives—all because he had chosen a chicken!

Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and grow. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be very different from those used by adults. Living in a multi (多元的)—cultural society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also influence the language of the young.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can’t find in most dictionaries. These very informal (不正规的) words and expressions are known as “slang” (俚语). It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! However, here are a few examples:
◆“Safe”, “sorted”, “sound”, “cool” and “wicked” all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.
◆“Whatever” means “I don’t care (e.g. A: But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished. B: Whatever. I’m going.)
◆“He’s fine”. And “He’s fit.” both mean “He’s good-looking” Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.
Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield has recently required its pupils to stop using slang words such as hiya (hello), cheers and ta (both mean “thank you”). The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak “correctly”, this will help them get a place at university and a good job.
So, how important is it to learn these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English exam, though.
30. Which is the best word to complete the blank?Peter: I’ve just passed my exam!
Jenny: _________! Well done!
A.Cheers | B.Whatever | C.Hiya | D.Cool |
A.Modern slang changes very quickly. |
B.Young people use the same slang as their parents, |
C.“Fit” is only used to describe boys. |
D.It’s a must to learn some British slang. |
A.many British schools encourage the use of slang |
B.speaking slang helps young people to get better jobs |
C.children from different cultures feel respected |
D.slang is not considered as proper English in schools. |
A.discuss that slang should be stopped | B.explain the best way to learn slang |

Short days
Most high schools in Germany begin at about 8:00 a. m. and end at about 3:30 P. m. This means your morning will be busy with classes. You will have time to do homework and take part in private(私人的) clubs after school.
Formal setting
In Germany, teachers and students’ relationship is more formal than you might be used to. Teachers are respected and students must use the formal “Sie(德语,您)” when talking to teachers.
Getting to school
Most students take public transport to school or ride a bicycle. Some areas have school buses. It is not common for parents to drive students to school.
Private clubs
In many countries, schools offer official sports and after-school activities. This is less common in Germany. After-school activities are usually organized through private clubs. There are clubs for things like soccer, dance, choir(合唱队), theatre and almost everything else. Once you are in Germany, ask around at school and talk to other students to find out what private clubs are in your area and meet your interests.
Different states, different schools
Each of Germany’s 16 states has its own slightly different school systems. The school system in Brandenburg will be a little different from the System in Bavaria for example. Where you live, your knowledge level and your age will decide what school you can attend.
