When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. My father could catch many fish but I caught _______. I usually got very sad and kept asking him _______. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to _______ like a fish.” “But I am not a fish,” I said. “And I don’t know what fish like.”

As I got a little older, I began to understand what my father really _______. Bob Bear was the richest animal in the forest but he was very mean. He never shared. When his poorer neighbours came to his house and asked for food, he shouted. “Go away! It’s MY food!”

One day Sally Squirrel had a birthday party. Bob was not invited but he saw Sally’s friends give her a lot of nice presents. “I’d like some presents,” thought Bob, so he decided to have a party. He went to a shop. “I need some party food,” he told the shopkeeper. “How much is a large brunch of bananas?”

“It’s twenty—five dollars fifty.” she said. Bob was surprised. “That’s too expensive. How much is a bottle of honey?”

“A bottle of honey is twenty—eight dollars thirty,” said the shopkeeper. “A bottle of honey is more expensive.” Bob held up his paw. “I want the cheapest food,” he said. The shopkeeper gave him two black bananas and a small packet of cookies. “Good! These are cheap.” Bob smiled. “They only cost eleven dollars thirty.”

At the party Bob opened his presents——a bag of apples, five cans of orange juice. “These are not birthday presents!” he shouted angrily.

“We know you don’t like sharing so we were afraid there wouldn’t be enough food. That’s why we brought food,” said Fred Fox. “We are happy to share all we have with you because we want to be friends.” Bob’s face went red. “I’m sorry,” he said. “Let’s share this lovely food together, my friends.” From then on, Bob was never mean again.

He was the only gray cub (灰色幼崽) of the she-wolf. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was gray like his father. He was the strongest cub. He showed more anger than his brothers and sisters. He made more noise.

His father and mother live mainly upon meat. In his first month of life, he lives on mother’s milk. And now, at a month old, when his eyes had been open for about a week, he began to eat meat himself.

There came a time when there was no meat. For many days the cubs did not eat. They were too weak and tired to play. One-Eye, the cub’s father, was killed in the fight over food. Even the she-wolf left home to find meat. But there was nothing. One by one, the cubs died. Only the she-wolf and gray cub were left.

One day the gray cub ran out to hunt for his own food. He met a weasel (鼬) of his size. The rat—like animal ran at him and bit his throat (喉咙). He was nearly dead when the she-wolf arrived just in time to kill and eat the weasel.

The gray cub was not good at hunting yet, and still needed food from his mother. One day, the she-wolf brought him a lynx kitten (小山猫). While eating, he heard great noise. The kitten’s mother had followed the she-wolf here. The she-wolf and the she-lynx started to fight, and they would fight to the death. The gray cub ran forward and bit one of her legs. This was enough to give the she-wolf the time she needed. The lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt. For about a week, she didn’t move. The gray cub had to find food for both of them.

Without his mother to take care of him, he learnt what life was about. Without meat there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to live. The law was：EAT OR BE EATEN.
