Is there a hero in your heart? What did be do? Today I’ll share a story with you, which happened many years ago.
My family has always been poor, but we are a close family. In December, things got even worse. We went from being poor to being homeless, and finally we lost everything but our two beautiful dogs. However, after one week, all of our money was gone and our dog food was running out.
We called all over the town, trying to find someone to help. However, nobody would give a hand. I was worried that our dogs would die without food. I called one last place in town—a small pet food store. There, a young girl answered the phone. She checked the dog food prices and told me how much they were. I told her about what we were facing. Then, this sweet girl told me that she had some money and that she would buy the dog food for us. She didn’t even ask to be paid back.
Hearing his, my fears went away. I knew that our dogs would have food, all because this young girl paid for it out of her own pocket. She didn’t know me, but she would help my dogs. This young girl will always be an angel to me, and an angel to my dogs as well.
So try to reach out your hand next time when others need your help, just because someone has done it for you and it really makes something different. Then you will be the hero in your heart.

A smile is the best language. The truth of a smile is that it’s like a seed that can grow in a garden called “life”.
If there is one thing I have missed the most is the past 3 years, it is to see other people smile. When every face has a mask (口罩) on it, you might feel safer. But your mind might start to feel sick. Over these last months, I’ve learned to notice the “stars” in people’s eyes that they still have when they smile from behind a mask. Still, it isn’t quite the same.
Every smile is like a gift. As I grow up, my mom’s smile always warms my heart. I am so happy that it appears on the faces of my children. My grandparents’ smile always has a happy “Hello!” along with it. My dad hardly smiles to us, but I always loved seeing it.
Over the years, I have also learned a lot about smiles. I have read that “We don’t smile because we are happy. We are happy because we smile.” I also read that
“I have never seen a smiling face that wasn’t beautiful.” And I know that both of these things were true. What I remember most, though, is something from my teacher. He said, “If nobody wants us to be happy, why does smiling feel so good?”
It doesn’t matter is you are wearing a mask or not. It doesn’t matter if your teeth are white or not. Show the world your smile. Smiles share our love. Smiles spread our joy. Smilles make the world’s better place. One of the greatest, kindness and most loving things you can do is to give another person your smile.
8. What does the writer tell us in Paragraph 2?A.Smile with “stars” in our eyes, or we’ll feel sick. |
B.The more we smile, the more happiness we’ll get. |
C.A smiling face behind a mask is different but happy. |
D.We can bring out the best to make our friend smile. |
A.Mom’s smile | B.Grandma’s smile. |
C.Dad’s smile | D.Grandpa’s smile |
A.![]() | B.![]() | C.![]() | D.![]() |
A.Smile to yourself every morning. |
B.It’s meaningless to smile with a mask. |
C.Never show your smile to strangers. |
D.Try to share your smile with the world. |
How many machines does your family own? What machines do you use every day? Can yow live a life without machines?
Let’s read
When I was a boy, we had a tiny television set. It only had one channel. Still, I would always be in my chair when cartoons came on.
The one I liked best was The Jetsons (《杰森一家》), a cartoon full of fantastic machines that could do anything. I always smiled or even laughed when I watched it and dreamed that one day I would have machines like this to do all my work, so I could just sit back and relax.
Now my life is full of machines like these, but I seem to have more to do than ever. Just today I had to spend most of the morning downloading a new copy of my word list so I could write better. When I first started out, I wrote my stories online. Last week, I spent most of another morning trying to get my new coffee maker to work right. I seem to be swimming in a sea of new rules and problems that come with “new technology”.
Now don’t get me wrong. Computers and machines have done a lot to help all of us. I just want us to be able to use them without them using us. We always seem to be busy because we’re spending most of our time using these machines.
I hope that in the future, machines can be more user-friendly so we needn’t spend all our time on them. With machines we can live an easier life, but they can never take place of the time to spend with family and friends.
12. Why did the writer talk about his childhood cartoon at first?A.Because he thought of the happiest time he ever had. |
B.Because he introduced the best cartoon, the Jetsons. |
C.Because he gave readers a dream for their future lives. |
D.Because he would tell us something about machines. |
A.New coffee makers. | B.Word list. |
C.Old TV sets. | D.Online stories. |
A.It’s quite easy to learn the new rules of machines. |
B.People cannot use machines as well as they hope. |
C.Machines are useless and helpless in the future. |
D.We’ll have no time with friends because of machines. |
A.More than machines | B.Machines online |
C.Machines and humans | D.Future machines |
How is the school life in your new school? Maybe you’re not sure how to answer this question. Here are some different ideas. |
Tony School life in our school means new skills, new friends and new interests. It is never boring. There’s always something new in school or after class. Teachers and students here often do different subjects or activities together. We could also be from different ages. |
Amy Teachers are very friendly. Teachers here won’t leave you alone. Teachers and students here often do different subjects or activities together. Our teachers always encourage you to ask questions and give answers. They’ll show an interest in what you and the other students are thinking about. There’s always something new ia school or after class. |
Frank Homework can help us review after a day of learning. We can see whether we have mastered what we learned. It can help us develop good learning habits. It will be useful for our future studies, or even our whole lives. Surely, homework does bring pressure. But it encourages us to work hard. |
Lisa Leaves fall off trees. But have you ever thought of picking them up and making art with them? Students in our school always do it in autumn. We use different leaves to make pictures that describe how we feel about autumn. Some of us also added some drawings or short lines to their works. In our school, we all know that “A falling leaf can show us the coming of the fall.” |
William Building a house at school is really a cool idea. This month sounds like a big project. Our first step will be to find a right place of land. We will try to find a sunny place near our teaching building. Next we will find an excellent builder, and together with the builder we will work out a plan. |
