When I was in the eighth grade, my teacher asked us to write an article about what we would like to do when we grew up. All I could think of was that I wanted to help other people! Over the years, I met many difficulties and failures (失败). But I never thought of stopping what I promised. I know that to help other people I have to help myself first. When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting (浪费) food.

Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a large pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out, cook some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember I watched my mum cook meat for us in the mornings. She would always take the oil (油) carefully and pour it into a container (容器). Then she would use the oil late to add taste to many other dishes. Before I grew up, I never knew potatoes didn’t taste like meat at all!

I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up. I tried not to waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals and only bought the things on the plan so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our mouths, and either my family or my dogs ate any leftover later. To me, throwing food was just a terrible thing.

Wang Xiangjun is the first blind (失明的) student to take gaokao in Anhui. She went to a music college in Tianjin in 2015. It’s never an easy thing for blind people to do.

Wang was blind when she was born. At the age of eight, she started to learn to play the piano. The first problem for Wang was to find the keys. She had to listen to the melody (旋律) again and again, keep it in mind and then practice playing it over and over again. She worked very hard and played better and better. Music made her confident (自信的) and happy.

“Many kind people have helped me over the past years. I wish to pass (传递) on the love to more blind children by working as a teacher,” said Wang after she finished college in 2019.

Her dream came true soon. She became a piano teacher in the Hefei Special Education Center that year. Now Wang lives a busy but happy life. “All of my students are so lovely.
