1970 was World Conservation Year. Everyone must know that the world is in danger. _______ is one example of the _______. At one time there were 1300 different kinds of trees and flowers in Holland (荷兰), but now only 866 remains (继续存在). _______ have been destroyed (毁坏) by modern man. We are changing the earth, the air and the water, and _______ that grows and lives. If we go on like this, we shall destroy ourselves.

What will happen in the future? Perhaps _______ is more important to ask “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world tomorrow are _______ young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save _______.

Now fifteen million young people in many countries are studying _______ and the country around them. In some countries they spend much time as “conservation volunteers”. They plant trees and help to _______ wild birds and animals.

But everyone, ________ young people, must work to save our world.

① Thank you all so much for being here. It means so much to us. First, I’d like to thank everyone for coming today. The love and support that my family has felt from around the world has been so uplifting(鼓舞人心的). Thank you so much for all your prayers. I’d like to talk about both Kobe and Gianna, but I’ll start with my baby girl first.

② My baby girl. Gianna Bryant is an amazingly sweet and gentle soul. She was very thoughtful and always kissed me good night and kissed me good morning.

③ She loved to bake. She loved putting a smile on everyone’s face. Last August she made a beautiful birthday cake for her daddy. Kobe’s birthday cake looked like it was professionally decorated. She made the best chocolate chip cookies.

④ Gianna was confident but not in an impolite way. At school she offered the boys’ basketball team some advice. She was very much like her daddy and they both liked helping people learn new things and master them. They were great teachers.

⑤ Gianna was very sweet. She always made sure everybody was okay. She always kept our family together. She loved family traditions, and family movie night was important to her. She always looked out for everyone and wanted the best for us.

⑥ Gianna knew how to read, speak and write Chinese, she knew Spanish and had great grades and kept them up all while becoming a great basketball player.

⑦ She was a beautiful, kind, happy, silly, thoughtful and loving sister and daughter. I cannot imagine life without her. Mommy, Natalia, Bianka, Capri and Daddy love you so much, Gianna. I will miss your sweet handmade cards, your sweet kisses, and your gorgeous smile. I miss you, all of you, every day. I love you.

Jan puts the things back in the box. Suddenly she remembers the photo of Tom on her phone.

She looks at the photo of Tom sitting on the sofa in his living room and she says, “How can I find you, Tom?”

She thinks of searching on Google but there are millions of people called Tom and she doesn’t know his surname. She thinks of going to his parents’ house but the town council pulled down these houses years ago when they built the motorway. And then she remembers something—the Kiwi key ring. Tom has the Kiwi key ring from the time capsule. If she enters the key number at the Kiwi Internet site, maybe she can find him.

Jan logs on to the Internet and goes to the Kiwi Technology website. She follows the links to the key ring section of the site. The page asks Jan to enter the key ring number. Her dad used the same number as her phone to make it easy to remember. She enters the number and clicks on “Go”. A few seconds later a message appears: Kiwi key ring located! The Kiwi key ring you are looking for is located at Kiwi Technology, Port Prime.

Jan stares at the computer screen. “Oh, no!” she thinks, “It’s not working.” But then she thinks, “Maybe Tom works at Kiwi.” She goes downstairs and finds her mum and dad having coffee in the kitchen.

“Mum? Dad? Is there anyone at Kiwi called Tom?” Her mum looks at dad, surprised by the question.

“Why…yes. There are a few people called Tom working there.”

“There’s Tom Bradley in our department… and Thomas Duncan in accounts… and Tom Green, of course.”

“Who’s Tom Green?” Jan asks.

“Michael Green’s father, you know, the boy in your class at school.”

Jan can see Michael smiling at her from the back of the classroom and suddenly there’s something familiar about his face.

“Yes, it’s him!”

“Michael Green?”

“No. Tom Green. I’m going to see him,” Jan says excitedly.

“You can’t see Tom Green. He’s the head of the company. He started the company. He’s an important man. ”

“Colour, colour, colour!” are the words of the artist Eric Carle. Eric is like the king in the world of children’s books. He has written over 70 children’s books. His most famous book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is common on children’s bookshelves all over the world. What most people don’t know is that Eric also makes art for adults, which is called “ArtArt”. People didn’t know about it, because he didn’t show it to the public until he was 84 years old!

Like Eric’s children’s books, his “ArtArt” is full of bright and clear colour. He says that he loves colour so much because he missed it during the war in Germany. Eric was born in New York in 1929, but moved to Germany with his family when he was 6. When he was 10, World War II began. He noticed that all the houses and buildings in his town were painted grey, brown or dark green. It was a sad time, and it seemed like there was no colour anywhere.

At the end of the war, “when colour came back,” Eric explains, “I just loved it so much. I keep saying that I wish our eyes could see more colour. Colour is a very important part of my work.”

That’s true. Eric paints bright colours on Paper, cuts out shapes, and then glues them onto another piece of paper. This method is called collage (拼贴画). In fact, it is what led Eric to his “ArtArt”.

Eric’s “ArtArt” includes large collages as well as paintings, photographs and even costurmes.

In all these works, he uses all kinds of colours—everything from purple to light green to orange.

Now that’s a lot of colour!

The game of Go is one of the four most popular games in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive(竞争的) event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment(娱乐).

Go was created in China more than 4,000 years ago. Now many people around the world have shown great interest in it, too. Moreover, Go is still used as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries today.
