Life in Britain

Many British people live in houses, not apartments(公寓). Most houses have gardens.

Children start school at about 9:00 am, and finish at about 3:30 pm. Most children have lunch at school. All children go to school when they are four or five years old, and leave when they are sixteen or seventeen.

Most shops open at about 9:00 a.m. and close at about 6:00 p.m. Usually, they don’t close for lunch.

Every morning, I walked past an old man. He greeted(问候) everyone that walked by him. I was surprised how he knew so many people’s names. The first time I saw him, I didn’t say hello back to him when he greeted me. I was thinking about something.

One Monday he asked, “How was your weekend?” I told him about my visit to my sick mother. He told me how sorry he was for my mother’s illness. When I walked away, I remembered that I did not even know his name. The following day, I asked, “What’s your name?” He answered, “Gary.” After that, we talked a lot with each other. We shared the story about our families and our hobbies.

Some years later, Gary was too old and he had to move into a nursing home(敬老院). It has been years since I last spoke to him, yet the memory(记忆) is just yesterday. You see, when you say hello to others, you also give love to them.

In the past, after students graduated from the university and got jobs, only some of them went on with their study. But today, lifelong learning is becoming more and more common.

Lucy, who is forty, teaches physics at a university in Boston. “Next term, I’ll teach some of my classes by using the Internet. This is the way of teaching that I’ve never used before,” says Lucy. “These days, I am taking a class to learn about the computer. If not, I will lose my job.” Lucy’s seventy-year-old parents, who live in New York, are taking an art class on line. Her father says, “We learn art to enjoy ourselves.
