When I was fourteen years old, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn’t the first time I had been abroad (Like many English children, I had often been to France). So when I went to America I thought I would have a nice easy holiday without any language problem.

How wrong I was! The misunderstanding began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to tell my American friend Danny that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking lost and asked if he could help me.

“Yes,” I said, “I want to give my friend a ring.”

“Well, that’s nice,” he said, “Are you getting married? But aren’t you too young?”

“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied, “I only want to give my friend a ring to tell him I’ve arrived.Can you tell me where there is a phone box?”

“Oh,” he said, “there is a phone over there.”

When at last we met, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.

“Don’t worry,” he said to me, “I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which Americans use differently in meaning from British people. You’ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. Most of the time, British and American people understand each other.”

David walked down the street. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But his mother told him to return his sister’s books to the library on his way to Jim’s house.

In his eyes, books and summertime just don’t go together. He thought he had read a lot during the school year. And he had never set foot inside a public library. Today he’d just drop the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to return them.

David walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he’d be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off. He was locked in a library.

David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn’t find one. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light and found a little one on the desk. He used a pencil to write a note on a big piece of paper. It read, “I’m locked inside. Please call for help.” He put it on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his attention to the library itself.

He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books! When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on the desk, he picked it up. He opened the book and began to read. He felt that being locked in the library didn’t seem to be such a terrible thing.

Gu Ailing (Eileen Gu) is a free—skier with an American father and a Chinese mother. She grew up and still lives in the United States, but in June 2019, she became a Chinese citizen(公民) and chose to compete(比赛) for China. Gu Ailing started to learn skiing in 2006. At that time, she was only three. At the age of nine, she was able to ski well and started to win gold medals(金牌) in some important competitions. In 2020, she won two gold medals for China at the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games. At the beginning of 2021, she won two gold medals for China at the X Games(世界极限运动会) in the United States. She won two gold medals and one silver medal for China at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. All Chinese are proud of her.

Gu Ailing was hard-working at school. She often discussed questions with her classmates. She was a grade-A student and good at her schoolwork. In December 2020, she became a student at a famous American university.

Although Gu Ailing was American, she spent her summer vacation in Beijing every year with her mother when she was young. She was a foreign girl, but she often played with Chinese children. She had a good relationship with them.

In her free time, Gu Ailing has many hobbies, such as running, riding horses and playing football. She is also interested in art.

In the days that followed, People in Lilliput did their best to make me feel at home and brought me food and drink.
