If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.

Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you’re self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.

Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence (信心). The World Health Organization says self - awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self - aware doesn’t mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.

How do you learn to be self-aware? It’s a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with “What” instead of “Why” . So if you don’t understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you’re arguing.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don’t be afraid to dislike something—discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.

After traveling more than seven months in space, Tianwen 1 is one step closer to Mars! Tianwen 1, China’s first Mars probe, successfully entered Mars orbit (轨道) in February, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). It will stay in orbit for about three months before landing on the red planet.

A small step on the red planet will be a big step for human beings. Humans have launched 46 Mars exploration missions since October 1960, but only 19 of them have been successful, according to China Daily. It’s China’s first spacecraft to Mars, and the missions are rather ambitious. Tianwen 1 aims to achieve “orbiting, landing, and roving (环绕，着陆，巡视)” all in one journey, which will make the country the world’s first to achieve all three goals with one probe, mission scientists said.

Among the three tasks, touchdown on the red planet is the most difficult. The result mainly depends on the “breathtaking (惊险的) seven minutes” to make sure Tianwen 1 land safely, according to the Global Times.

February was Mars month. NASA’s Perseverance Rover (毅力号火星车) landed on Mars on Feb 19, and China’s Tianwen 1 and United Arab Emirates’ Hope Probe have arrived within orbit of the red planet. Although the three countries started their Mars journeys at almost the same time, their missions vary. Hope Probe successfully entered the orbit of Mars on Feb 9. Perseverance will collect samples (样品) of rock and soil for further research. Tianwen 1’s ultimate goal is to land a rover on Mars in May or June, and it will carry out scientific research on Mars’ soil, environment, water and so on.

“When we step into the far planets of the solar system, the magnitude (量) of the resources and timeline required will take global action,” a US official said, highlighting (强调) the importance of international cooperation (合作) in space.

The earliest recorded face mask-like objects date back to the 6th century B.C. Some drawings of people wearing a piece of cloth over their mouths were found in Persian(波斯的) tombs(坟墓).

In China, face mask-like objects first appeared during the Yuan Dynasty.     47     It was believed that the masks would keep the servants’ breath from affecting the food’s smell. In the 14th century, a deadly disease called the Black Death spread to Europe.    48     French doctor Charles de Lorme invented the beak mask. The mask looked like the head of a bird. It completely covered the wearer’s face. The wearer had to see through the glass in the mask. The medicine in the beak section protected the wearer from diseases.

    49     In 1910, a serious disease spread in northwestern China. The Chinese government asked Wu Liande, a medical scientist, to investigate(调查) it.     50     He invented “Wu’s mask” and advised people to wear it. Within four months, the disease was brought under control. Since it was cheap and easy to make, the mask was widely praised.

Over the past few decades, some scientists have tried to further improve the face mask. Today, face masks are among the world’s best-selling things. They play an important role in our fight against COVID-19.
