This year marks the 26th anniversary (周年纪念日) of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. Over the past 26 years, Hong Kong has seen     30     changes under the support of the central government.

Most of the early people in Hong Kong were from Guangdong and spoke Cantonese(粤语).   After the First Opium War, English became its official language. Over the next 150 years, people mixed these languages.

Arthur, a Hong Kong boy, said that he began to learn English     31     he was 4 years old. After he entered middle school, almost every course,     32     math and art, was taught in English. He     33     used Putonghua in language courses.

But at home, Arthur sometimes talks with his parents in Cantonese. According to him, the old people use Cantonese in most cases. But the language is not easy for     34     young because unlike learning Putonghua with pinyin, there are no such rules to follow.

Although using many languages is challenging, it benefits Hong Kong people a lot. After learning languages, Arthur thinks he can solve more problems.

One day, Frank was walking with his mother outside. When they came to a pretty garden, he called to his mother and said, “Mother, I wish I could open the gate and walk in.”

The gardener, being near, heard what Frank said, and ▲      invited him and his mother to come into the garden.

Frank’s mother thanked the man. Turning to her son, she said, “Frank, if I take you to walk in this garden, you must take care not to meddle with(乱动) anything in it.” Frank walked along the paths(小道)and looked at everything, but touched nothing.

The gardener was very pleased with Frank because he was so careful not to make trouble. He showed him the seeds and told him what the flowers and plants were.

While Frank was admiring the beauty of a flower, a boy came to the gate. Finding it locked, he shook it hard. But it would not open. Then he said, “Let me in. Let me in. Will you not let me in this garden?”

“No,” said the gardener. “I will not let you in, because when I let you in yesterday, you meddled with my flowers, and even picked some fruit. I do not let boys into my garden who meddle with the plants.”

Ashamed, the boy walked away slowly.

Seeing this, Frank felt happy because he didn't touch the things that don’t belong to him. He and his mother then continued their walk in the garden, and enjoyed the day very much. Before they left, the gardener gave each of them some pretty flowers.

Recently, a video has caught the world’s eyes on the Chinese short-video platform, Douyin. In the video, young children call out to their mother or father; the parents, turn around and call out to their own parents; the grandparents then call out to their parents—the great grandparents.

This video is being described as the “four-generation(辈) challenge”. It has quickly spread to social media in other countries. People from all over the world have commented(评论) on the videos, “Family care is usually a strong value,” a user wrote on the Internet. The four-generation videos have not only touched millions of foreign viewers but also given them a deeper look into Chinese family values.

In most East Asian cultures, it is common to live together under one roof(屋檐), this is called a big family. In most Western countries, most families are nuclear families—families that are made up of just children and their parents.

In Western culture, personal information and independence are highly valued. Kids usually move out of the house after they grow up. Many of them apply for loans(贷款) and work part-time jobs in order to pay for college and daily life. If they choose to continue living with their parents after becoming an adult, it can be seen as a sign of failure.

Although family structures in the East and West may be different, the love and relationship between family members are common. That might be why the “four-generation” videos have won so many hearts around the world.

Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing. But now you should be thankful.

Scientists found that forgetting is actually a key part of learning. Getting rid of(去除) unnecessary information can help our brains work better.

What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment you live in.

The environment is always changing, so our brains may require us to remember less. For example, a supermarket salesgirl meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. But a designer who often meets his or her customers will remember longer.

That’s because there is a special area in our brains called the hippocampus(海马体). It plays an important role for humans in learning and remembering. When new information goes into the hippocampus, it renews our old memories. This could explain why you forget so much information when you were very young.

However, being forgetful is not always good. When you don’t have enough sleep, you may have a hard time remembering new information. Sleep helps the brain store and keep information.

Last year, I went to South Africa, and then I worked as     72     volunteer at a Children’s Hospital. My role was to help make the kids feel happy     73     they were staying in the hospital. Sounds interesting, right? But some people can’t     74     (real) understand why I did it.
