A man in black jumps high into the air. Before he lands, he strikes(摆出)a pose. With long white sleeves(袖子), he spreads his arms like wings. Sometimes, he carries a red fan. His dance is eye-catching, often bringing in crowds.
He is Chinese dancer Ma Jiaolong. Since 2020, he’s made short videos of himself dancing in London. He has performed at the city’s parks and iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge. The 35-year-old has nearly 5 million followers on Douyin, where he shares his videos.
Classical Chinese dance brings martial arts movements together with those of traditional Chinese opera. He started to learn it at the age of 12. “I was attracted by the dancers who play ancient heroes through the movements of classical Chinese dance,” said Ma.
Ma studied at the Beijing Dance Academy. Since 2019, he has been teaching classical Chinese dance at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Three years ago, Ma had to give online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his small home, he could only make small moves. One day, he took his wife’s suggestion and danced at Greenwich Park, a popular tourist spot. She recorded Ma. He then edited the video, added music and sent it to friends. “Surprisingly, they loved it, which inspired me to share it online,” said Ma.
Later, Ma made more short videos of his performances. People are often interested in his moves. So, while dancing, he likes to interact with his audience.
“Now, making and sharing short videos has become a part of my life and, most importantly, a great way to introduce classical Chinese dance to more people, especially overseas viewers,” said Ma.

By the year 2050 the world’s population may reach nine billion. An interesting question is: what happens when people in poorer countries raise their living standard and demand more meat in their diet? Imagine trying to feed nine billion people with enough meat. In short, it’s simply impossible.
Australian journalist and science writer, Julian Cribb, explains the challenges the world faces in feeding nine billion people by the year 2050. Cribb says there is a major problem in the current food system in the developed world, at least. As more and more people move towards city centers, the less and less they know about where their food comes from. Most think food simply grow on supermarket shelves, and they don’t consider the environmental effects of food production.
Food has many hidden cost: huge volumes of water, energy use and land degradation(退化). Consumers add their own costs by simply throwing away a lot of food. The number for food waste in the West is staggering.
To solve this problem of public ignorance(无知) about food. Cribb suggests that food should be taught as a subject at primary school. This would help to create a future generation that could better deal with the world’s coming food challenges. This powerful measure can help to raise a generation of educated consumers, more productive farmers, and so on.
Cribb offers other solutions and suggestions as well. One is to increase the funding for agriculture science, which has been falling by the wayside in recent years. He suggested organic(有机的) farming should be understood on a scientific basis, changing people’s thinking to a new form of “environmental agriculture” to get the very best out of organic farming systems. He says we should stop wasting food and learn how to grow food more cheaply. We should use less water, as water is one of the main inputs into food production. Cribb also suggests eating more fruit and vegetables.

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going.
When the world’s population was still mainly made up of hunter﹣collectors, small and deeply connected groups developed their own patterns of speech which is not connected to other groups’ speech. Some language scientists believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started lives and become farmers, and their languages too became fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade and the spread of education, especially globalization (全球化) and better communications, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6, 800 languages. However, the people who use the languages in the place they spread are hugely different. The general rule is that warm and comfortable places on the Earth have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot wet places have lots, often spoken by small numbers.Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1, 000;Africa 2, 400;and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3, 200.What’s more, the median number(中位数) of speakers in the world is nearly 6, 000, which means that about half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already far over 400 of the total of 6, 800 languages are close to disappear, with only a few elderly speakers left.Busuu in Cameroon (8 remaining speakers), Chuapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (2 or 3)or Wadjigu in Australia (1, maybe one speaker): none of these seems to have much chance of living.
34. What can we infer about languages in hunter﹣ collector times?A.They developed very fast. |
B.They had similar patterns. |
C.They were closely connected. |
D.They were large in number. |
A.Powerful. | B.Ancient. | C.Difficult. | D.Modern. |
A.About 6, 800. |
B.About 3, 400. |
