文章大意:本文主要讲述了作者一次尴尬的教学经历。

It was my first full-time job as a teacher in a high school in Riverside, California. The Department Chair told me that I would teach a writing class. I felt very confident.

It was my first class. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised. These kids looked too tall and mature(成熟的)to be high school students! I still didn’t have a list of names, so I started by talking with them and asking questions. Everything was fine until I noticed a tall boy eating a piece of cake. Rule 1, clearly written on the board, was “NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS”. I got a little mad and asked him to read the rule out aloud. He did so and he got mad too!

I asked him, “Did you understand what you read?” This made him even madder.

“Yes, I did.”

“Well, then, what were you doing just now?”

“I was eating a piece of cake,” he looked at me angrily.

“Well, get up, go outside and throw the cake away.”

And then both of us made a mistake. He said, “Here, I don’t even want it.” Then he put the piece of cake in my hand. The icing(糖衣)of the cake went among my fingers, making a real mess. I was so mad that I hit the cake on his hair!

The class started laughing and clapping. Somebody got up, went to the board and wrote “Teacher - 1; Mark - 0”. I didn’t know whether I was supposed to laugh or not, but I couldn’t help it. And then, Mark got up and left.

The story was all over the school later. Some students came to me and said, “I hear that terrible things will happen if somebody tries to eat cake in your class!” Oh, how embarrassing!

Now I still teach, but I’m much better at dealing with students.

Why Should We Learn Body Language?

In English classes, we spend a large amount of time studying grammar and learning new words. We work hard to improve our reading and listening skills. Few of us, however, pay enough attention to body language. So body language is not important, is it?

The answer is, “Yes!” As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” Sometimes, we can communicate things even without a single word. For example, shrug our shoulders, and, without a word, we’ve just said, “I don’t know.”

Body language can help us stress what we are saying. It can help us express our true, inner feelings. Moreover, body language can help us find out if someone is lying. Often, people who are lying do not make eye contact. They may turn away or raise their shoulders because they are uncomfortable with the conversation.

In job interviews, the interviewers can sometimes judge the interviewee before he or she speaks. Body language is important in our personal lives, too. It can show if you really care about your friends. Leaning forward into the conversation, for example, means you are interested in what is being said. Listening without making eye contact means you are not paying attention but are waiting for your turn to speak.

Scientists have been studying body language for a long time. They say more than 70 percent of our messages are delivered through body language. Sometimes, body language is more accurate (精准的) than the words we use.

So it is very important for us to learn body language. By understanding body language, we are less likely to be misunderstood. We will find it easier to get a job. We will also have lasting friendships.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。讲述了Robinson首次出海经历暴风雨的故事。

Well, it wasn’t long before I wished I had stayed on land! After only a few hours at sea, rain fell and the wind howled. The waves tossed the ship around like a toy.

“Are you all right, Robinson?” Tom had to shout to be heard in the terrible wind. “No. I think I’m going to be sick,” I cried. I had never had sea-sickness before, and I was miserable. “It’s a punishment from God. I never should have disobeyed father,” I thought as I felt sicker and sicker.

The weather got worse. The wind blew and thunder and lightning struck the water. I felt sure we were all going to die. “Please, God,” I prayed. “If you save me, I will go home to York, and work hard at business with my father. I’ll never step onto a ship again!”

Fortunately, the storm soon ended. Evening came, and the stars shone brightly in a clear sky. The wind stopped and the water became calm. I slept deeply. The next morning, it was a beautiful day. The water was a sparkling blue and the sun shone.

As we sailed into the south, I forgot all about my fear of the storm.

I stood on the ship and watched the English coast pass us by, and I felt all the world was mine. I could go anywhere and do anything!

Tom and I became friends with the rest of the men and one of them offered us some rum. It wasn’t long before we wanted another drink, then another. Soon we were all happily drunk and singing sea songs.

文章大意:本文主要讲述故宫将与华为合作,利用5G技术建立一个“智能网络”,提升其管理水平,更好地保护文物,服务于公众。

When visitors to the Palace Museum feel a need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they soon will be able to turn to their smart phones for the information they need.

This modern solution comes thanks to an agreement signed on Friday by the museum and Huawei Co., the telecommunication giant, to build a “smart network” using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China’s royal palace from 1420 to 1911.

“It’s important to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics, such as when the priceless painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 am to have a look. The museum ended up preparing fast food to serve the hungry visitors. “I don’t want that scenario to happen again,” Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.”

The new system will also make use of the closed-cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum’s precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures?” Shan said. “After adopting the internet of things, we can instantly detect any motion involving the relics to prevent such threats.”

The 5G network also will be used to improve remote meeting through webcams, which will discuss with scholars to jointly find the best answers for repair and store issues.

38. What do we know about the Palace Museum?
A.Its visitors won’t have to queue up for the bathroom.
B.It has served as China’s royal palace for over 500 years.
C.It will cooperate with Huawei to promote its management.
D.It will set up advanced television cameras only for the purpose of safety.
39. What does the underlined word “scenario” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.disasterB.situationC.operationD.exhibition
40. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.A Feast for safeguardB.A Revolution in Exhibition
C.A Protector of Cultural RelicsD.A Connection Between Old and New

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,给我们如何创建一个情绪板,控制自己的情绪。

A fun way to put yourself in a good mood (情绪) is by creating a mood board. What’s that?     41     Susie Moore, a life coach, often guides people at mood-board-making classes. At the end of a class, each person has built a collection that puts him or her in an active mood.

To create your own mood board, you’ll need a soft board or a cardboard.     42     Go through them, cutting out photos for your board. Use your feelings to choose what works best. Here, Shay Maunz uses Moore’s tips to create a mood board and offers tips on how you can make your own.

43     Anything that makes you feel good, use it. I used photos of my favorite food watermelon, and my favorite animal, penguins.

You might use your mood board to set goals for things you’d like to achieve. I want to read at least 30 books this year.
