Have you ever paid attention to your school’s security guards (保安) or dining hall staff (职员)? Would you say “good morning” to your school’s cleaners? For high school student Ding Jiacheng, it’s a problem that many students ignore (忽视) the important jobs done by these non-teaching workers. He wanted to make a change.
The boy from Hangzhou Entel Foreign Language School, together with several other students, worked on a project called “The Invisible (隐身的) are Significant”. They hoped more students would see and respect the “invisible” staff on campus. The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard University and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social issues.
“My team members and I sent questionnaires (问卷) to 158 students,” said Ding. “In one question, 56 percent of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers, while only 17 percent strongly believe that every student should do so.”
The team also observed interactions (互动) between students and workers. “When most students follow the rules of their teachers, one-third of the students go against the rules of the dormitory attendants (宿舍管理员),” said Ding. “It shows that students treat non-teaching staff differently from teaching staff.”
The main reason, according to Ding, is that students know little about the work done by non-teaching staff. They also have few chances to communicate with them. Therefore, Ding’s team shot videos to show staff working around campus. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching staff to increase their interaction.
“We’ve also made a series of stickers (贴纸),” said Ding. “We hope these cute images will help young people like the non-teaching staff more.”
“The activity helped me understand that we can all make a positive impact (积极影响) through our creative ideas,” said Ding.

ChatGPT, a smart AI chat-bot(聊天机器人)tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1, 000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework task.
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create food menu, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned(禁止)the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices(设备), CNN reported.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat(作弊)on study. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread wrong information.
“It does not build critical-thinking(批判性思维)and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic(学术的)and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting (起草)policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, headmaster for education at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is “adapt(调整)our learning, teaching and examinations”. That way, we can “have integrity(诚信)while recognizing(辨认)the use of the tool”.

It’s hard to turn down a tasty banana. They taste good and you don’t have to wash them before eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may die out by 2050.
One reason for this is the weather change. Scientists at the University of Exeter collected numbers from 27 countries and places that produce 86 percent of the world’s bananas. They found that weather change has made growing conditions in 21 of these countries better. In the past 60 years, the average yield(平均产量)has reached 1.37 tons of bananas per hectare(每公顷).
However, if temperatures keep rising, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, including India, the world’s biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050, the fruit may die out.
Shouldn’t bananas grow more easily if it’s hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature for growing bananas is between 24℃ and 32℃. If the temperature gets too high, they will stop growing.
Diseases are another danger to bananas. Unlike other plants, the bananas we grow come from shoot cuttings(茎段)rather than seeds. This means that all banana plants have the same genotype (基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.
One serious disease is called Panama. Caused by fungus(真菌)in the soil, it spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana farm catches the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow bananas again. Have the scientists found a cure for this disease yet? No.
