Yang Jinlong, a 46-year-old performer, drives to primary schools or middle schools in Xi’an at 9 a. m. and teaches students about Shaanxi kuaiban until 6 p. m.. Then, he returns home to prepare classes for the next day.
Shaanxi kuaiban is a form of traditional Chinese storytelling in the Shaanxi dialect(方言), to the rhythm of clapping bamboo strips(竹板). It can be performed by a group or one person.
The art form showed up in the late Qing Dynasty(1644—1911). Farmers used it to share their knowledge and earn money. Now people perform Shaanxi kuaiban at festivals, parties and art shows.
Yang himself first learned kuaiban at the age of 9. Before that, he often went with his father to watch kuaiban performances.
“As a young boy, I was drawn to the art form because many of the stories are about heroes. It’s easy for the audience to remember the stories since all the lines rhyme,” Yang said.
His love for kuaiban has driven him for more than 30 years. To make the art more popular, especially among young people, Yang tries to be creative. Instead of the traditional gown, he wears a suit while telling modern stories. Yang also borrows many pop elements(元素)like tap dance, ballet, jazz dance and the rhythms of popular music. His stories focus on more modern topics, like stories of heroes who have worked to reduce poverty(贫困)and members of the Chinese Olympic team.

David Bennett, a 57-year-old man from the US, received the world’s first pig heart transplant in January, 2022. He died two months later, on March 9.
It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation(异种器官移植).
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart, lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has turned to animal organs.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century. There are few success stories. Usually, patients’ bodies reject(排斥)the animal organs. Bennett lived much longer than other xenotransplant patients. That’s because scientists removed pig genes(基因)that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
“A lot of new information will come out that will help the field move forward at a faster speed.” Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the transplant program, told The Guardian.
In another xenotransplant success, in 2021, doctors at New York University joined gene-edited pig kidneys to a human patient’s blood vessels(血管)outside of the body. Also that year, doctors at the University of Alabama put the gene-edited pig kidneys inside a patient’s body.
Though these recent successes were short-lived, they show that there may be a way forward for xenotransplants.
16. What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Xenotransplantation. | B.The world’s first heart transplant. |
C.The transplant program. | D.The pig heart transplant Bennett received. |
A.Because it can make people live longer. |
B.Because new organs are in short supply. |
C.Because human bodies reject the animal organs. |
D.Because many people die after receiving a new organ. |
A.The transplanted organ was put outside of his body. |
B.Human genes that would cause fast rejection were removed. |
C.The transplanted heart was gene-edited to avoid fast rejection. |
D.The transplanted organ came from a pig instead of other animals. |
A.The recent xenotransplantation successes were meaningless. |
B.Over 100,000 patients are waiting for new organs around the world. |
C.Doctors at New York University put pig kidneys inside a patient’s body. |
D.Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation for about 100 years. |
A.Xenotransplantation is developing step by step. |
B.Patients receiving xenotransplantation won’t die. |
C.Xenotransplantation does harm to people’s health. |
D.Xenotransplantation is sure to solve all the problems. |
METRO Line 11’s business-class carriages, launched June 30, 2017, have come under the spotlight after some passengers complained about squeezing into crowded carriages during rush hours, while the business carriages often appear empty.
While some citizens believe that the carriages should be canceled because of low utilization rates(利用率), others argue that they are practical for people with special needs and that there should be different choices available to meet the needs of different groups.
Line 11, which runs from Gangxia North in Futian District to Bitou in Bao’an District, serves as an important transportation choice for many migrant workers commuting(通勤)between central Shenzhen and the northwestern part of the city. Unfortunately, because of the long waiting times between trains and a limited number of carriages, overcrowding has become a big problem during rush hours.
In response to commuters’ complaints, a new train operation schedule was carried out on Line 11 on March 6, 2023, with the departure interval(发车间隔)of trains running between 7:50 and 9 a.m. during morning rush hours reduced to five minutes 30 seconds and the transport capacity(运输力)increased by 27.2%. The departure time of the first and last trains on Line 11 has also been brought forward or put off as part of the optimization measures(优化措施)
In addition, Shenzhen Metro Group has opened the line’s business carriages for free during morning rush hours from 8 to 9 a.m. and evening rush hours from 6 to 7 p.m. However, some commuters have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the new measure. Now passengers can only get on a business carriage at Gangxia North and Futian stations during morning rush hours.
21. What is the problem with Metro Line 11’s business-class carriages?A.It’s under the spotlight. | B.It often appears empty. |

B.To argue the best choice for passengers. |
C.To stress the need to cancel the business-class carriages. |
