文章大意:本文主要讲述了George de Mestral发明魔术贴的经过以及魔术贴的作用。

On a summer day in 1948, a Swiss man named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When they came home, George discovered that he and his dog were both covered with burrs (带芒刺的小果实).

As an engineer, George naturally began to wonder how exactly the burrs stuck to his dog and his clothes. Then he looked at them under a microscope (显微镜). He found that the burrs had very tiny hooks (钩子), which allowed them to catch on to things like clothes. George realized that he could use this finding to create a new way to fasten things.

As so often, it is a very long journey from the idea to the final product. It was easy to find the materials that could stick together, but finding materials that would continue to do so after years of use was difficult. George tested a large number of different materials and production methods. After years of research and work, he invented what is known today as Velcro. In 1955 George started Velcro Industries to turn his idea into a product. In a few years, the product became popular around the world.

Today Velcro is used everywhere. It’s used in backpacks, jackets, wallets, children’s toys, etc. It even turns up in the places you wouldn’t expect. For example, Velcro has been used by NASA for astronauts’ spacesuits. The product was also used to hold the heart together during the very first artificial heart transplant (人工心脏移植).

文章大意:本文主要介绍了研究发现,狗能够通过气味来分辨人类是否有压力。

Are you stressed? Your dog can probably smell it, according to researchers from Queen’s University Belfast in the UK.

The researchers carried out a study to find out if dogs could tell the difference between a person’s normal smell and how he smells when he’s stressed.

To do this, they first collected breath and sweat samples(汗液样本) from human volunteers. To make sure the samples work well, the volunteers were all non-smokers and didn’t eat or drink anything in the hour before the study.

The team then collected samples after the volunteers completed a difficult maths task. The volunteers were asked to report their stress levels before and after the task. The researchers also checked the volunteers’ stress levels before and after the task by taking their heart rate(心率) and blood pressure(血压). In total, 36 out of 53 volunteers reported feeling stressed because of the task and had increased heart rates and blood pressure.

Then each person’s relaxed and stressed samples were shown to four dogs—Treo, Fingal, Soot and Winnie. They were asked to find the stressed ones. Surprisingly, the results showed that the dogs got it right nearly 94%. “It was interesting to see how the dogs were good at smelling people’s feelings,” said Clara Wilson, one of the researchers. “I hope we can discover even more about these gifted animals and what they can do.”

Ms Wilson also added that the study could be especially useful in training service dogs, since some of them work hard to help reduce stress.

8. Why were the volunteers asked to complete a difficult maths task?
A.Because it could help reduce stress.
B.Because it could change their stress level.
C.Because it could collect their breath and sweat samples.
D.Because it could tell the difference between their abilities.
9. Which paragraphs introduce the process(过程) of the study?
A.2-5B.3-5C.4-6D.2-6
10. What does the underlined word “gifted” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Strange.B.Skilled.C.Stressed.D.Surprising.
11. Where is the passage probably from?
A.A TV guide.B.A story book.C.A personal diary.D.A science magazine.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了朋友之间发生冲突时的解决办法。

It’s completely normal for friendships to be tense (紧张的) at times, because two people don’t necessarily share the same tastes, ideas or ways of seeing or doing things. If you and your friend disagree about something, the two of you might not listen to each other or understand each other.     12     When that happens, it’s important to deal with it. Here is some advice that might be helpful when you deal with it. Be committed (坚定的). It’s important to show that you’re open and committed to solving the problem together. It’s not a competition, with a winner and loser, it’s a process you go through together.

13     Start by identifying (确认) the situation that you’re having a problem with and what you’d like to change (for example, “I prefer to be spoken to politely, not in this way...”)

Name your feelings. Tell your friend how the conflict makes you feel (for example, “...it makes me very angry...”). Find out possible solutions. Together with your friend, find out possible solutions.     14     At this stage, any idea is a start, so write them all down!

Assess (评价) the solutions. Together with your friend, assess all the solutions. Are any of the solutions realistic? Do any of them satisfy both of you? Will any of them solve the problem?

Come to an agreement. Together with your friend, choose the solutions you prefer and come to an agreement.

Reassess. Some time later, check if the agreement has been respected and if the problem has been solved.     15     If the solution you choose hasn’t worked, you can try another.

根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余选项。
A.Describe the problem.
B.Keep in touch with each other.
C.That’s when a conflict comes up.
D.You can even write them down on a piece of paper.
E.Take the time to talk to your friend and review your experience.

Many years later, there was an archery contest (射箭比赛) at the fair. Uncle Gamwell advised Rob to compete. On his way to the contest, he came across the man who had replaced his father as head forester, a good friend of Sheriff. Rob decided not to say anything and kept     31     (walk). Rob felt a sudden rage. “My bow is as good as     32     (you),” he said to the head forester.

“Show us some of your skill, boy. I’ll bet you twenty silver coins that you can’t hit the mark I choose,” replied the bad man.

Rob replied angrily, “Fine, for I     35     (see) your face too often. You are the one who wrongly took my father’s job.” With that, Rob turned and walked away.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要讲述了电影《万里归途》的内容,对人们的影响以及电影成功的原因。
阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。

The movie Home Coming took the lead in the box office (票房) during the National Day holiday.

It tells a story happened in North Africa. After a war breaks out there, two Chinese diplomats (外交官) are ordered to help evacuate (撤离) the overseas Chinese. After completing the first task successfully, they learn that another group of Chinese citizens is still in great danger. Realizing that these people will die if they don’t give a hand, the two men travel through the war area. They risk their lives to help over 100 Chinese citizens go to a safe place. The movie not only shows the two diplomats protect the people with courage, but also shows their deep love for the country and people.

Home Coming reminds many people of a similar real event which truly happened in Libya in 2011. Chinese Embassy (大使馆) helped the evacuation of more than 30,000 Chinese citizens. Behind this event were many efforts of Chinese diplomats. After watching the film, a man recalled his personal experience 11 years ago. “We are the lucky ones because we have a strong country and are well protected,” he said.

Home Coming is a success partly because of the growing national pride and confidence Chinese people have in our country. A comment (评论) reads, “Chinese passport might not get you anywhere you want, but it can always bring you back home.”
