The superfood of the future?

The number of people in the world is growing fast—every year there are about 70 million more people. So, we’ve got two questions that need answers: have we got enough space on our planet for so many people and how can we ________ we’ve all got enough food to live?

Many people eat too much meat—steaks, beef burgers, sausages, etc. That’s not good for us and we need big farms to produce all that meat. The farms already use 30% of all the world’s land: they create greenhouse gases and use a lot of water and energy. However, we can do something to ________.We can eat meat only one or two days a week, for example, and eat more vegetables—that’s healthy. We can eat some different types of meat—creepy-crawlies ________! That’s right, grasshoppers, worms, flies and lots of other insects. They’re the superfood of the future. They’ve got a lot of protein. Protein is very important for our health, and it’s good for our hair and our skin.

Protein keeps our muscles and bones in good condition as well.

There are two more reasons why insects are good food ________ insect farms don’t need so much water and energy. Also, they don’t use so much space.

For some people in countries in Asia and Latin America, eating insects is not ________. But for people in Europe and many other countries, it seems very strange.

What about you? Do you eat any healthy food? How much meat do you eat in a week? Perhaps you think you don’t eat insects? But maybe you’re ________. Why’s that? Because the red food colouring that is in many things that we eat comes from an insect called the cochineal beetle.

Dad gets it right! （finally）

Day five of the adventure in Italy and we’re in Naples. We arrived here early yesterday morning, but as usual we were only at the hotel for about five minutes before Dad wanted to take us somewhere. This time it was to the ancient city of Pompeii near Naples. I didn’t really want to go. I wanted to go shopping for shoes.

We travelled there by train. The journey didn’t take long—but long enough for Dad to tell us a bit about the history. Many years ago, Pompeii was a large Italian city near a volcano[1]called Mount Vesuvius—then on 24 August 79—the volcano broke out and completely covered the city in ash[2]. It killed about 20, 000 people. But the ash didn’t destroy the buildings and now, 2, 000 years later, you can walk around the city and see how people lived all those years ago.

(1) 000-year-old houses：thanks, Dad—really boring, I thought, but I was wrong! The houses were very interesting. Most of them were really big with lots of rooms（so lots of space to get away from troublesome brothers and sisters! ）There were paintings and mosaics[3]all over the walls. I’d love a Roman mosaic of One Direction on my bedroom wall. Also, I was amazed at the bathrooms. I’d love a big bathroom in our house—ours is so small!   

I got really interested in Pompeii. I wasn’t bored at all. In fact, I’ve got lots of ideas for our house when we get home!   

In Japan, one of the best parts of spring is hanami, or flower-viewing. Whether you prefer taking a walk under the trees or having a picnic in the park, there are some rules to keep in mind.

Rule 1: Only take the space you need

Since hamami is such a popular activity, it might be hard to get a space where you can sit. Most people want to have a     34     close to the trees, restrooms and rubbish bins, so these areas are taken quickly. It is understandable to want to make yourself     35    , but please take other visitors into consideration and don’t take up more space than necessary.

Rule 2: Take your rubbish home

Eating and drinking under cherry trees is very relaxing；however, no one can enjoy the Sakura when piles of rubbish start to build up. Public places in Japan     36     provide litter bins. If they do, there are so many visitors that the bins can quickly become full. Throw all your rubbish away in the proper     37     or take it home with you.

Rule 3: Never touch or damage the trees

To take a perfect selfie, some tourists might climb trees or     38     the branches to create a petal shower. However, cherry trees are easy to break when you touch the branches. Also,     39     hanging or placing any heavy objects on the tree trunks or branches.

Rule 4: Mind the noise you make

Taking an afternoon to hang out with your friends in a public park sounds like a lot of fun. But remember that you are not the only people     40     to have fun under the trees. Being outdoors doesn’t mean you are     41     to be as loud as you want. Please be considerate towards the other people who are enjoying themselves in the same park.

Hilary Lister, 33, can’t move her limbs (arms and legs) or her head—she is completely paralysed. However, she has just sailed alone across the English Channel! How did she do it? Sam Wollaston, a journalist finds out.

“Where do you want to go?” laughs Hilary Lister. We are on a boat going out of Portsmouth Harbour, and Hilary is sailing it. Suddenly, she’s happy and free. Sailing does that to her. “It’s given my life meaning a    42    ,” she says.

Hilary is paralysed because of an unusual disease, but she hasn’t always been like this. When she was a child she was always a    43    , and she played various sports. But when she was 11, she began to experience pain in her legs. By the time she was 15, she was no longer able to walk.

About six years ago the disease s    44     to her arms and hands and she can’t use them any more. She thought her life was over. Then, two years ago, a friend took her sailing for the first time. She loved it! But she didn’t want to be a p    45     only. She wanted to sail a boat herself. So she took up sailing as a way to become more confident. “I had this mad idea to sail across the English Channel,” she said.

Hilary didn’t know anything about boats or sailing. But she started to design her own boat. Then she found a boat and some people to help her. The controls of her boat come from her wheelchair and she can drive the boat with her m    46    . By blowing into one tube, the boat goes right, and by sucking on another, it goes left. After some lessons, Hilary became quite skilled at sailing.

Last month Hilary achieved her d    47    . She left Dover alone in her boat. It was sunny but quite windy. Six hours later she arrived in Calais, France. She was exhausted, but very happy. It was the longest journey made by a completely paralysed person. And she has become the first disabled person to sail across the Channel. Hilary says the experience has really changed her life. “Next I want to sail around Britain,” she says.
