When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.

I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes left. A few days later, grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon for us in the mornings she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn’t really taste like bacon!

I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself, my boys, my husband or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was wrong.

However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast (盛宴).

Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.

Me: Hello, Television Viewers! I am Aziza Bellamy, and thanks for watching. I want to especially thank you. Ms. Bertha, for agreeing to this interview on live television. It’s a pleasure to meet you, the first-known visitor from outer space to Earth. Now, I understand that you are from a planet called Zademol?

Bertha: Just call me Miss Bertha or Bertha, please, but not “Ms”.

Me: Okay, sorry about that. So, you’ve been on Earth for about a week now. What have been your biggest disappointments or challenges so far?

Bertha: It’s not the worst planet I’ve ever been to. Mercury was much worse. The family I’m staying with, for example, were nice at first. But now they roll their eyes whenever I open my mouth to say anything. They’re not interested in any of my stories. And I think they may be trying to avoid me. Worst of all, they make me wash my own dishes and bathe myself. They’re so rude.

Me: Oh, um… wow. That’s just.

Bertha: I am used to having high standards when I choose where to stay, by the way. I have stayed with presidents on other planets. And they all admired me and begged me not to leave. But I gave this human family a chance to host me. I mean really, they should be grateful that I chose them, of all the people on Earth, to wash my clothes and cook my meals and treat me.

Me: Well, what you’re saying is surprising, Bertha. Do you think it’s possible that this family just wants you to pitch in(投入) a little to be a good guest?

Bertha: It’s strange to me that you’re not agreeing with me. If you were smarter, you’d agree with me. Everyone on Zadermol is smarter than the smartest person on Earth. Earth is below me.

Me: You know what, Bertha? I’m starting to see why you’re so unhappy here on Earth. You’re just a boastful alien.

Can plants talk? Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.

It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help, “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps(黄)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.

More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds out plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Com and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.

Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi(霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other, It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.

Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.

How to avoid careless mistakes?

Careless mistakes can make you feel worse than big mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, and that’s okay. However, there are some ways to get yourself back on track(轨道) after you make mistakes.

Don’t worry. We are humans and we all make mistakes sometimes. Avoid putting yourself down when you make mistakes. A mistake is more like the brain shuts down, notices the inactive feedback you give yourself as threat, and then avoids thinking about it completely.

Ask yourself why you might have made a certain type of mistakes. Write down how you could have avoided making them. Allow more time to do that, start earlier, and pay more attention to what you are doing, etc.

It’s amazing how fast lack of sleep can make people forgetful and cause them to feel stressed, which can lead to careless mistakes. Get enough sleep and you’ll keep a clear mind all day.

When you make a mistake, you should face it bravely. Don’t make excuses that are useless. What you should do is to review your mistakes and learn from them. As the saying goes, “A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit.”

Don’t let a mistake get you down. There’s no need to be a perfectionist. Don’t beat yourself up. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s how you deal with mistakes that is important. Simply think about how you can solve the problem and move on. Believe you will do better next time.

It was a dream born in fire. Andrea was 5 when she and her mother were trapped on the roof of a ________ building.

Andrea has a good understanding of life. She knows that the window on her physical abilities won’t stay open forever. Still, “I am a little ________ about that I can’t fight fire any longer when I get too old, but I did get my dream.”

There was a businessman who was deep in debt(债务) and could see no way out. He sat on a park bench, head     36     his hands. After several     42     (month), he was out of debt and making money again. At the agreed-upon time, he returned to the park with the check. The old man appeared. Surprisingly, he     43     (follow) by a nurse. The nurse said that the old man was mentally ill and was always telling people he was John D. Rockefeller. The businessman was shocked     44     (hear) this. Suddenly, he realized it wasn’t the money that had turned his life around. His newfound self-confidence     45     (give) him the power to achieve anything he went after.
