Rob Frenette has been bullied (欺辱) at school for eleven years. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems. He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences. They also wanted to hear his ideas of stopping bullying.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie, he made a website called www.bullyingcanada.ca. Visitors to the website can find advice and stories about bullying, in both English and French. When people are upset, they can talk on the phone or online to Rob and his team. Rob also speaks to children, teachers and members of the government around the country about bullying.
Rob’s most important message is: “When bullying happens, it isn’t your fault. And you should believe in yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. You just have to find those people.”
One of Rob’s ideas is “Blue Day”, a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes and in class they learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day, but Rob won’t stop until there’s a Blue Day in every school in Canada.

Last year, I went to Italy as an exchange student. Before leaving, I asked my mother what gifts I should take to the teachers and the students there. Mom said that the Chinese fan was a good choice, for China is praised as “the Fan Kingdom”. I couldn’t agree more, because it is more than a tool for cooling. It’s also an important part of Chinese culture.
I went shopping and bought three kinds of Chinese fans. The first kind was the feather(羽毛) fan for the teachers, which was made of bird feathers. It was the symbol of Zhuge Liang, a very smart man in ancient China. The fans I bought for the girls were silk fans. They were also called “round silk fans”. Fans of this kind were made of silk with paintings of beautiful women, birds or flowers. They were very popular with women of all ages. As for the boys, I picked the folding fans from Rongchang, a place in the west of Chongqing. The folding fans were made of paper and bamboo and there were great paintings and calligraphy(书法)on them.
At the welcome party in Italy, my new teachers and classmates were all excited to get the wonderful fans. And they were even more excited after learning about the stories and culture behind them.

We are always using body language in our daily lives. When we have a conversation with someone, we may use more body language than words. However, the same body language may mean different things in different countries. That’s why people sometimes cannot understand each other.
Pointing to (指) one part of the body can have different meanings in different cultures. For example, in the USA people point to their heads when they think someone is clever. However, in Europe it means “He or she is stupid or something is wrong with his or her head.” In our Chinese culture, nodding our heads up and down means “yes” and shaking our heads from side to side means “no”. However, in some parts of India, Greece and Turkey, they mean just the opposite. |
In England or the USA, when you raise your hand and make a circle with the thumb(拇指) and the second finger, it means “Everything is all right”. However, if we do this in France or Belgium, it means “You are worth zero”. In Greece or Turkey, we should not make this gesture. Or we are thought to be very rude(粗鲁的). |
The meaning of gestures can also change over time. In the 1960s, the “V” sign meant “peace”. However, during World War II, it meant “victory”. In Greece, it is an insulting sign. It will be very rude of you to make this gesture in front of a woman. |
Though the meaning of body language is different, there are some expressions having the same meaning throughout the world, such as smiling and crying.
