I grew up in a poor family. My dad died when I was 3 years old, leaving my mom with the job of raising nine kids. She worked in a factory for 50 dollars a week and had another job at a poultry plant(家禽厂). She was a very hard worker. In order to make ends meet, she never took time off.
My mom believed in doing all she could do to take care of her responsibilities (责任). No matter what, we kids always got the things we needed. With my mom as my role model, I learned that hard work is the best way to get what you want.
In junior high, I started playing basketball on my school’s team. I loved to play. I enjoyed going out and working hard to win.
For me, it paid off. I always put the effort in every day. No matter what I’ve done, some people wait for me to fall, saying. “Karl Malone can’t do it.” Instend of letting people like that get to me, I continue to prove them wrong. I try to do my best to make my family proud.
While everyone else was looking up to popular sports stars, actors and musicians as role models, my mom was my inspiration. She taught me that hard work pays off. At the end of my life. I don’t want to be remembered as the kind of person who just sat on their rear end and said. “I’ve made it.” I don’t want to say that I didn’t give it everything that I’ve got. Sure there are days that I don’t feel like working hard. But I do it anyway. And that’s how I’m working toward becoming a successful basketball player.

TikTok is a video-sharing app that has taken the world by storm, and for anyone over the age of 20. You’ll see dancing, jokes and amazing shows. After you’ve watched a few, you’ll find it is strangely fascinating. Unsurprisingly then, TikTok is now really popular. It’s said that the app has 3.7 million users in the UK alone, and each spends about 40 minutes every day on it.
So why does TikTok become so popular? The success is mainly thanks to its great algorithm (算法). In fact, its developers ByteDance learn that there’s a difference between what we say we want to watch, and what we actually want to watch.
Other social apps, like Facebook and Twitter, choose videos that we want to see. However, TikTok takes a different way: it learns about your actual behavior on the app. If you quickly swipe (滑过) away from someone dancing to a pop song, it’ll learn to show you less dancing videos. If you watch a cooking video all the way to the end, it’ll show you more cooking videos. Over time, TikTok will learn more and more about what you like to watch, so finally you’ll come back more often and spend even more time on the app.
Although it enjoys high popularity around the world, some people argued that TikTok should be limited or even stopped. Why? When it comes to TikTok, parents often hear about dangerous challenges like the milk box challenge. To many adults, they sound unbelievable, causing some to wonder if TikTok is simply an app that encourages teenagers to do stupid things.
But TikTok is a lot more than that: It includes videos from famous people, scientists, historians and anyone else. Experts wish parents to learn more about TikTok and then make the rules for how their children use it.

How do we know about things that happened thousands of years ago, when there were no videos or photos? One answer is written records. The earliest written records of Chinese culture are known as oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文). They were discovered 121 years ago.
More than 3,000 years ago, people in the Shang Dynasty liked to ask fortune tellers (占卜师) about the future. People asked questions about many topics such as the weather, the work and love and so on. The fortune teller would write the question on an oracle bone, heat it up, and then read it to find an answer.
Tens of thousands of oracle bones have been found so far. They can tell us a great deal about how people lived during the Shang Dynasty. “They help us understand where our culture comes from,” Song Zhenhao, a leading oracle bone expert, said.
In addition to telling us about ancient Chinese culture, the oracle bones are also keys to understanding the growth and development of the written form of the Chinese language. Many of the characters we use today are similar to those used 3,000 years ago. “The oracle bone inscriptions, as the earliest-known form of Chinese characters, stand for the beauty of a language that has been passed down consistently (持续地),” said Chen Nan, a professor at Tsinghua University.
In 2017, UNESCO added oracle bone inscriptions to Its Memory of the World Register (“世界记忆”名录). They are indeed a valuable memory of ancient China.
