Dancing is popular all over the world. Most people dance in theaters, in parks or in their own living rooms. However, Yang Liu, a 24-year-old girl from Guizhou, dances at an unusual place. Her stage is a single bamboo pole on the water. Yang is a performer of bamboo drifting (独竹漂). It is a traditional skill in the girl’s hometown. In ancient times, the local people crossed the rivers by riding on a bamboo pole. Now, bamboo drifting has developed into a folk sport.

Yang started to learn the technique from her grandmother at the age of seven. As she was in poor health as a child, her grandmother wanted her to become stronger through this sport. Yang threw herself into practicing bamboo drifting all year round, even in the winter cold and summer heat. She fell into the water again and again, but the girl didn’t give up. She always got back onto the pole and tried again. She practiced hard every day. Finally, she was able to keep her balance on the pole. However, Yang didn’t just stop there. She decided to live out her dream of becoming a dancer on a bamboo pole. The girl practiced many different kinds of movements on the pole. She failed countless times, but she never stopped trying.

Her hard work finally paid off. Now Yang has made a name for herself as a dancer on a bamboo pole. Her videos of dancing on a single bamboo pole are very popular on the Internet. Through Yang’s dances, many people now know about bamboo drifting. They have discovered the beauty of this traditional skill.

“I hope that more people can know about bamboo drifting and enjoy it,” said Yang.

Last week, I finally managed to ask my parents to buy me a new football shirt for the school match. I was very excited and wore it to the training before the match, but I wished I hadn’t done that! My new shirt was torn（破损的）after the training and only a tailor（裁缝）could help!

As I walked home worriedly, I saw a shop sign：ALL KINDS OF REPAIRS AND SERVICES! I went inside at once. I looked around the shop and saw broken toys, broken chairs...I wondered if I was in the wrong place. Just at that moment, a man with white hair came up to me and said cheerfully, “welcome! This is a repair shop and I can repair everything!”

“But...what I need is a tailor to deal with my football shirt.”

“You’ve come to the right place. I’ve been waiting a long, long time to repair a football shirt.”

“Really?” I held the shirt in my hands.

To my surprise, he took the shirt from me, put on glasses and sat down on the sofa with my shirt in his hands.“I guess you are a striker（前锋）, “he smiled. How could he know? The man gave me a wink（眼色）and said calmly, “See the picture on the wall? That was me 30 years ago.”

I couldn’t believe my eyes! He was Orhan, the famous footballer who was on the city team years ago! I told him that I was playing for the school team and I had been his fan for years. I told him everything, my dream, my practice and even my dad’s words. “Dad think I should be an engineer or a doctor” I lowered my head.

“Follow your dream, choose a job that you love and carry on.” The man smiled at me with his blue eyes. He patted（轻拍）on my shoulder and put the shirt which he had repaired in my bag.

Today I have become a footballer and I still keep the shirt in my closet.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long.     57     You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (慷慨的); be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.     58    

Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.     59     They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.     60     So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.

    61     But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

Dreams are like stars. You may never catch them, but if you follow them, they will lead you to success. Yan Ning is such a dream follower.

Yan is a rising star in the science world. When Yan Ning was only a little girl, she dreamed of being a scientist. After years of hard work, in 1996, she went to Tsinghua University to study biology. After graduating from Tsinghua in 2000, she went to Princeton University and finished her study there in 2007. Then she returned to Tsinghua and set up her own lab (实验室). At the age of 30, she became the youngest professor (教授) at Tsinghua.

Now Yan has become a leading researcher at Princeton. She is one of the 100 new members in the US National Academy of Science (美国国家科学院).

However, it was a long and difficult road for her to make such achievements. She said that in order to make her dream come true, she experienced a lot of difficulties. But she never gave up her dream. Instead, she followed her dream and fought for it. She usually works for at least 14 hours a day. Sometimes she even forgets to eat and rest, and she always works until late night. She never gets tired because she thinks doing research is the most “comfortable” job for her.

In a TV interview, Yan asked young people to work hard for their dreams. “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to follow them.”

China is a large country with a long history. Our ancestors created excellent cultures for us. Once China was the strongest country in the world, especially in Tang Dynasty. But for more than one hundred years China has fallen behind other countries for some     72     (原因). Other countries showed no respect to our nation even invaded China.

However, Chinese people are hard-working and peace-loving. Under the lead of the CPC, China is now the s    73     largest country in economy in the world.
