Giving back to society
On the basketball court, Juan Adames is a pass-first pointguard (传球控球后卫). The 18-year-old always helps his teammates who are in the best position to score. Off the court, he’s the same way.
As a student at Germantown Academy in Philadelphia, US, Adames has created a non-profit organization called Leaders of Tomorrow, which aims to connect with young kids and give them knowledge that they might not be able to get in school. The organization hosted a rally (集会) called Stop the Violence last September.
They offered a place for youngsters, community-leaders and police officers to play games together. Adames and other members tried to improve relations with law enforcement (执法部门) officers.
They have also helped to give out meals to families in need. Last November, the group raised more than 1, 000 (about 6, 846 yuan) to buy food for a local family center.
Adames said his passion for public service comes from his father. “He fought in wars. He lost hearing in his right ear, but always has been the kind of guy who would mentor (教导) my friends. . . He always wants to offer a helping hand,” Adames said.
But due to the coronavirus outbreak, the group has not been able to help many people in recent months. The group’s members feel that their work is more important now than ever. So they’ve planned as many community-bonding (增强社区凝聚力的) events as they can.
“Young people are being heard. We want to put them on the right path to help make our society better for everybody,” Adames said.

The United Nations lists the rights(权利)of children. Most countries agree with all of them, but some countries do not. The following are some of the most important rights of children.
●Children have the right to be fed, clothed and sheltered by their family. If their family cannot do so, the government should take responsibility.
●Children have the right to an education and medical care.
●No child under fifteen should fight in an army.
●Children must not be tortured(虐待)or cruelly punished by their parents or any others.
●Children have the right to expect the government to protect them from all kinds of abuse(虐待).
●Children have the right to be protected(保护)from working too hard to make money for other people.
