There was once a poor man who lived in a village. Every day, he walked through the village looking for someone who could give him a little work. When he was lucky, he made enough money to buy one small meal.
One day, the man saw a fat goose (鹅) run by, so he caught it. “What a hearty meal you will make!” said the man. “Tonight my stomach will be full.”
“Do not eat me!” cried the goose. “I am a goose like no other. If you feed me and take care of me, I will lay golden eggs for you.”
“Can this be true?” the man wondered. “Since this goose can talk, perhaps it can lay golden eggs, too. I will give it a chance (机会).” So the man took the goose home and fed it the last food in his kitchen, even though he had to go to bed hungry that night.
As soon as he woke up the next morning, the man rushed over to the goose. Under the goose he found a large, shiny egg made of gold. He took the egg to the market and sold it for lots of money. When he came home, his arms were full of food, including good food for the goose.
Each day, the goose laid another golden egg and the man sold it. Before long, the man was very rich, yet he wanted to become even richer. “Why should I spend so much money on food for the goose?” he asked himself. He decided to cut the goose open and get all the golden eggs at once.

African elephants can now be counted from space, using high resolution images (高清图像). The researchers say the new technology can be used to protect the animals better.
The researchers used satellites (卫星) 372 miles above the earth to take some of the highest resolution images. They then made a computer program that could identify (识别) elephants within the images (图像). Dr Olga Isupova, from the University of Bath, told the BBC, “We could train the machine to see small details that we wouldn’t be able to pick up with our eyes.”
Usual ways of counting elephants are to fly above them in the planes or get humans to count the animals on satellite images. This can be difficult, because elephants are hard to be seen when they are among trees or tall grass. It takes a long time and mistakes can be made. The new technology means elephants can be counted more correctly and the work is much faster. The computers can do the same amount of counting in a few hours by the new technology instead of (代替) humans’ monthly work. Clouds still are a challenge, because they can block (遮挡) the satellites’ view. Luckily though, most places where the elephants live do not have much cloud.
The researchers say the new technology can help to save elephant populations from being hunted (捕猎), because it is easier to find where the elephants are and so plans can be made to protect them.

Going to an art museum can be a fun activity. However, if you’re not sure what the art is about, it may seem boring. Here are many ways to understand different kinds of art.
You don’t need to visit the most famous museum in your area. Instead, have an adult help you look at the websites of a few local museums to see what exhibits(展览) they have. Choose one you’re interested in to visit. For example, if you enjoy taking photos, you might go to a photography exhibit.
If a piece of art (艺术品) catches your eyes, you may start by getting close to the artwork. Think about the story the artwork may be trying to tell. Bring a notebook and pencil with you, so you can make a quick drawing yourself. This way, you might see new details (细节) of it that you didn’t notice before.
If you want to find out more details of the artwork, a volunteer at the museum maybe helpful to talk to you about it. Free brochures (手册) may also provide information. You can also ask yourself what the work means to you. For example, maybe the colors in the piece remind you of a place that’s special to you or the emotions you’ve been feeling.
After you leave the museum, consider which pieces of art stay in your mind and why. Talk to a friend who went with you, and ask them about their favorite pieces, too. The way artists make themselves understood through their work is the magic of art really.
12. What’s the writer’s advice when choosing a museum?A.Ask your parents to help you decide. | B.Visit the most famous museum nearby. |
C.Choose an exhibit that interests you. | D.Go to see a photography exhibit first. |
A.To draw a similar picture by yourself. | B.To draw a picture of yourself quickly. |
C.To write down the story of the artwork. | D.To copy things from the free brochures. |
A.The art pieces that stay in your mind for a long time. |
B.The way you understand an artist through their work. |
C.The time you spend talking with your friend or adult. |

Learning how to read English well can be an important task. But it’s something you’ll have to do on your language learning journey. Reading well in English is useful for many reasons, including but not limited to taking tests. These tips are for you!
There are textbooks and graded readers, but there are also lots of books you can read. To choose the right reading material (材料), you need to decide what your goal is. And don’t pick a book that is too easy or too difficult.
To improve your reading, you need to plan a time to read. To make sure your practice gets done, put it in your study schedule! You could also set a reading goal. Set aside a certain amount of time to spend reading or decide on a certain number of pages you want to read each day.
Reading can both introduce you to new words and teach you how to use them. Many words in English are often used together in a similar way. Reading groups of words, or words that go together, will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.
As you’re practicing your reading, you need to accept the fact that you might not understand every single word, and that’s OK! Your brain can only learn so many new vocabulary words at one time. It’s more important to get the big picture of what you’re reading and go back to check words you don’t understand later.
We hope these tips can help improve your reading skills!
A.Don’t try to understand everything. |
B.How to improve your reading. |
C.Choose the right reading materials. |
D.How to learn all the subjects well. |
E.Read groups of words. |
F.Be well planned. |
