The stone walls, the yard, clothes hung on a clothes line ... At first sight, you may think they’re real. But in fact, you’ve actually fallen down a rabbit hole of miniatures （微观模型） of Chinese traditional houses in the 1990s made by a miniature artist. Feng Jiangtao, 32, has made more than 40 miniatures for people around the country to reproduce the old houses that carry their memories.

In April 2021, Feng made a miniature of an old shop in his hometown. It had black tiles（瓦片）, grey walls and a small TV playing cartoons. Feng then posted a video of this miniature online, which soon went viral. People around the country who watched the video with familiar feelings for their old houses got in touch with him, asking him to make house models according to the photos they provided. Making miniatures is not an easy job. It usually takes Feng about 10 days to finish one miniature. He makes them in a ratio （比例） of 1:30 to the real size. To better remake the old house, he uses real building materials, such as cement（水泥）, wood, and soil and then focuses on how to make it look old.

________. One of his customers, a post-90s girl, once asked him to reproduce an old house in her hometown. She used to live there with her parents. She wanted to give the model to her mother to keep alive the memory of her deceased（过世的） father.

“It is the old house that is miniaturized; however, it enlarges the family’s love and treasures the good old days that are now gone forever,” Feng told China Daily.

The story of Chinese fashion began when Feiyue and Huili, both Chinese sports shoe brands, suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. Chinese sportswear brand Lining was at the New York Fashion Week in September. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.

Shaun Rein, the founder and managing director of Chinese Market Research Group（CMR）, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customer’s eye by low prices. He told CNN,   “They are sure that they can head to head with foreign brands. ”

Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in western culture anymore.

“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements（元素）. ”Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival, “They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the picture of Laoganma—the famous chili sauce in China—which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now, young people are proud of these Chinese symbols.”

In fact, many stars in western countries are now interested in Chinese cultural elements in fashion. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a shiny and heavily—embroidered（绣花的）yellow dress to this year’s Met Gala to match the theme “China: Through the Looking Glass”. The dress was designed and made by Guo Pei, a Chinese designer.

“We have to move from making to creating.” Aric Chen, a Chinese—American designer, once told The New York Times, “We want to replace the words ‘Made in China’ with ‘Designed in China’.”
