Forty-six years ago on April 24, China launched(发射) its first spacecraft satellite Dongfanghong-1, and marked the country’s first major success in the space industry. And this year, April 24 was officially made China’s Space Day. Meanwhile, the government also announced a set of new space plans, setting sights on a space station, Mars and beyond.
A space station is like a home for astronauts in space. Astronauts can live, do research and even park spaceships there. China plans to finish building its space station in 2022.
According to China’s top space scientist Zhou Jianping, by that year, becoming an astronaut will be a normal job because more space work means needing many more astronauts than ever before. And they also need to be able to carry out different tasks. So they must have different kinds of knowledge and skills. “We’ve been choosing astronauts mainly from pilots. Now we will also pick them from engineers, doctors and space technology experts.”
Another plan that has drawn much attention is China’s Mars mission(任务). China will launch a probe(探测器) to Mars around 2020. It will land on the planet and even carry back samples(样本) from the surface of Mars, an action that never has been achieved by any country. “It’s such a big plan,” said Zhang Rongqiao, chief designer of China’s Mars mission. “Only by doing this can China say it has started the exploration(探测) of deep space in a true sense.”
