Last Friday, Carter’s brother Jackson was sick at home, so Carter took the bus home alone after school.
On the bus, Carter kept thinking of his model car, a 1967 Corvette. He had just finished assembling (组装) it. And he could start painting the car that night. That was his favorite part.
Carter hurried off the bus and rushed into his room excitedly.
“Surprise!” Jackson said.
“What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!” Carter asked.
“I feel better! Look what I did!” Jackson pointed at the desk in the corner.
Carter looked at his desk. His Corvette! He couldn’t believe his eyes—Jackson had painted it red. An awful color that didn’t look good on a car at all.
“Why would you do that?” Carter shouted. He clenched his fists (紧握双拳) .
“I wanted to surprise you! Do you like it?” Jackson asked.
Carter looked at his brother. Red paint was all over his face. Carter imagined Jackson spending the day painting the car. It must have taken him a long time to paint the car. He was not good at painting.
Carter took a deep breath and then he relaxed his fingers. He wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t want to lie (撒谎) , but he didn’t want to hurt Jackson’s feelings either.
