Cathy’s neighborhood used to be an empty land. As time went by, the land was filled with ________. People around there often complained (抱怨) that it smelt too awful in summer. ________ nobody tried to deal with the rubbish.

Two twin birds lived in different places near a forest. One lived near a cave (山洞) with some robbers (强盗). The other lived near an old man’s house.

One day, a young man lost his way in the forest. He walked for a long time and finally he came to the edge (边缘) of the forest. He sat down under a tree near the cave. Suddenly, he heard someone shouting, “Hurry up! There’s someone sitting under the tree. Come and take his money!” The young man was surprised. He looked up and saw a big brown bird in the tree. He also heard noises coming out of the cave. He stood up and ran away as fast as he could.

Soon, he came to the old man’s house. He sat down under a tree. Suddenly, he heard a friendly voice, “Welcome, sir. Please come in and make yourself at home.” The young man looked up and saw another big brown bird in the tree. He was surprised. “This one looks just like the other bird near the cave,” he said to himself.

“He is my brother, sir,” said the bird. “He has made friends with some robbers. They taught him to rob and steal money. I have made friends with a kind old man. He taught me to be nice to others.”

Once there was a milkman named Deenu. He had built his hut (木屋) far away from the village in the woods. He preferred the quietness of the woods to the noisy village.

Deenu was an honest (诚实的) man. He treated every person fairly, but sometimes he got cheated. So he thought the world was full of unpleasant things.

One evening, Deenu was returning home after selling milk in the village. He saw an old man sitting under a tree and meditating (冥想). So he walked up quietly. “Can I help you?” the old man asked with his eyes closed.

“Yes. I want to know how to change the world. Everything in nature is so beautiful, but there are so many bad people who only care about themselves. What can I do?” Deenu said.

The old man smiled and asked, “Did you smile at all your customers today?” “Sometimes,” Deenu answered. “For those people you don’t like, did you show them a smile first?” the old man continued. “Not really. Why should I do that?” Deenu asked.

“Well, if you really want to do something for the world, you can start with yourself. You can’t change how other people think or act, but you can decide what you do,” the old man said patiently. Deenu thought the old man was really wise. He thanked the man and walked home. He finally changed himself and the way he saw the world. Then he had a happy life.
