Adults often say things like, “Kids were so young when something terrible happened that they wouldn’t even remember it as an adult.” But childhood trauma (创伤) can have a lifelong influence. According to a study from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, kids who experience trauma have an increased risk of having heart disease in their 50s and 60s.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Results from the study showed that children from very difficult family environments were more likely to have heart disease later in their lifetime. What’s more, children who experience trauma face higher rates of lifelong stress and depression.
That’s not to say that a child will be emotionally scarred (留下情感创伤) forever if they have a terrible experience. But it’s important to know when a child may need help in dealing with trauma. ________ Here are some ways.
Be patient because it takes a long time for a kid to get better;
Answer his or her questions honestly and patiently;
Be a good listener and encourage the child to talk about his or her feelings;
Help the child understand that life is always full of ups and downs, but parents will be with him or her;
Encourage the child to make friends with those who are outgoing and friendly.
If the child is too shy to speak out, try to communicate by writing a note or chatting on We Chat.

Imagine a group of people are talking about something happily. But there is one man who cannot follow them. Why? He has a hearing problem. How can we help such people?
Now a new and exciting invention allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality (AR) (增强现实技术) glasses and a smartphone, deaf people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he spent Christmas dinner with his family. The man saw his 97-year-old bearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕) crossed Scarfe’s mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help.
Scarfe got to work, working with Nreal, an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio (音频) from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio and these subtitles then appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over 13 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of 430 million people.
This is a great change for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so surprised. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”
16. What tools must a deaf person have if he wants to join in the conversation?①A microcomputer.②A mobile phone.

A.The AR glasses are very popular among deaf people. |
B.There are 470 million people with hearing loss in UK. |
C.Subtitles can be turned into audio and people can hear it. |
D.A microphone in the AR glasses collects sounds around. |
When talking about basketball, you may think of NBA or CBA. But have you heard of VBA? It means basketball games organized by local people in the countryside, with players being locals.
VBA got popular online across China in the summer of 2022 because of the basketball games held in Taipan Village, Guizhou Province. From July 12 to 20, 176 teams took part in the games which were part of a festival. After that, another 27 games were held from July 30 to August 2 in the village as part of Guizhou’s “Beautiful Countryside” basketball competition. Sixteen teams from different towns competed and the final winner got a special prize, which is a 650-kilogram cow.
The games had no superstar players, no advertisements, and no tickets, but the atmosphere was warm. The players ran up and down the court (球场) at all times of the day and night. Although the weather was very hot, thousands of people went to watch the games. Some of them even live hundreds of miles away. Online, tens of millions of people watched the games.
In fact, local Miao people hold basketball games every year to celebrate the traditional Chixin Festival. All players must be locals over the age of 22 and professional (专业的) players are not allowed to take part in the competition. In the past, local people played basketball on dirty ground and even made baskets by themselves. With support from the government, new standard basketball courts have been built in recent years.
