Your mother is crying in the kitchen. Is she sad? No. She is cutting an onion! The onion is making her cry. Why?

There are many cells (细胞) in an onion. When you cut an onion, the cells become open. Then, a gas (气体) comes out of the cells. You cannot see the gas, but it flies into your eyes. Your eyes do not like the gas. They are trying to wash it away with tears (眼泪). So you cry!

What can you do? Put the onion in the fridge, or cook the onion first. Now, cut it. See? You do not cry. If you are in a hurry, here is another idea. Wear goggles and that will make your eyes feel better!

The World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events（赛事）in the world. Teams from thirty-two countries join in it. Each country wants to win the cup by becoming the NO.1 soccer team. The World Cup comes only once every four years. However, lots of people around the world like watching it when the games begin.

The World Cup started in 1928, and the first World Cup games were in Uruguay in 1930. Only men players could play at that time. The first women’s World Cup was in China in 1991.

Soccer is not quite as welcome in the USA as basketball or baseball. However, it still has lots of soccer lovers. People all over the world often get up in the middle of the night or stop their work to watch their country’s team play. More than five billion people watch the final match on television. During the games, people in the winning countries often have parties in streets to celebrate.

Some countries seem to be the best in the games for a period of time. When Pele played for Brazil in 1970, his country’s team won the World Cup. Brazil’s team is one of the greatest. Pele is the best soccer player in many people’s eyes. Brazil wins a total of five World Cups, far more than any other country.

Remember that your body has five senses. You can see, hear, smell, taste and touch. You can not use all five senses b    66     you can not taste or smell a word. However, you can use your o    67     three senses to help you remember. When you read a word, do not just read it to yourself. Read it aloud! Then you are seeing the word and h    68     the word when you say it. So, those are two senses. Where is the last o    69    ? Well, you touch the word when you say it. Your mouth is making the word. So, say the word loudly!

Dictionaries（字典）are useful! But when you are learning new words, try to remember them with p    70    . Do not just remember the translation（翻译）for “run” or “climb”.
