At the same time, Meng Shuqi, Feng’s classmate, knew that one of her relatives couldn’t read the latest books because of the same reason. They then teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem.

One year later, the two teenagers succeeded in inventing a new kind of Braille reader. In July, their work won first prize in a national competition. When connected to a computer, their Braille reader can turn words into raised dots (凸起的点). Blind people can then read by touching the dots.

“After doing market research by comparing different Braille readers, we’ve found that most Braille readers are very hard to use and expensive. Each of them sells for over 10,000 yuan,” Feng said. “So we decided to develop a user-friendly product especially for young blind children from Grade 1 to Grade 3. Moreover, it only costs about 2,000 yuan. ”

To make the invention, the team gained (获得) lots of knowledge and skills by reading online materials and asking their teachers for help.

After making their first device (设备), Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to get advice. They then improved their device. For example, they changed the size of the screen and the amount of space between the dots. “We hope the invention will be widely used in the future to help those blind people who can’t afford expensive Braille readers,” Meng said.

All parents hope that their children will live a good life, so it is of great importance to cultivate (培养) children’s good qualities of being knowledgeable and independent.     51     A child who would like to help others can shape a sense of responsibility and better achieve success.

To offer help to others can make children responsible and believable. It is the same in the family. When children learn to sweep the floor and wash clothes, they will feel that they are a part of the family.     52     However, if children are not educated to take responsibility at home, they will think parents should provide everything for them.     53    

As for me, when I was 5 years old, I was encouraged by my mother to do some chores for my family. She made me realize I was a member of the family and that I should be as helpful as I could. I started to help tidy up the study, clean the kitchen, and care for the flowers.     54    

My mom once told me, “Helping others is helping yourself.” I always keep her words in mind and try my best to help every person who needs help. I still remember the time when I got others’ help with my survey in school. At first, I was afraid no one would help me.     55     I wouldn’t have completed the survey so fast without them.

Helpful children can easily be successful because a helpful hand can bring more helpful hands. So it is meaningful for parents to teach their children to be helpful.

Jiang Mengnan was born in Yizhang County, Hunan Province. She lost her hearing when she was 6 months old. Ever since, she has been in a world of     61    . Yet after years of hard work, she overcame many difficulties to     62     her dream.

Yang wrote that the sweetness of osmanthus is so clean and rich that it’s “hard to believe it comes from nature and not from the moon in heaven”.

The Chinese people’s love for osmanthus has become a part of their food culture. Osmanthus wine and tea are popular traditional Chinese drinks. For those who have a sweet tooth, there are many foods made with osmanthus flowers. The flowers of osmanthus can also be collected to make honey and jam.
