Chuck and Chan were twins (双胞胎), but they had never met before. They had been adopted (收养) into different families. Chuck grew up in Montana. He liked to travel and paint. Chan grew up in Baltimore. He liked to cook and read.
When the boys were twelve, both of their parents sent them to camp in Virginia. Chuck was excited about the camp, but Chan was apprehensive. He worried about making new friends. The boys were assigned (分配) to the same room. When they met, each one felt that he was looking at himself in a mirror (镜子).
The other boys couldn’t believe it either. “You have to be twins,” one of them said.
Chuck and Chan didn’t believe it at first. But they had the same birthday. “We are twins!” they decided.
They wrote emails to their parents. They wanted to know the truth. As they were waiting for their parents’ replies, the boys got to know each other better. Though Chuck was outgoing (外向的) and Chan was quiet, they had a lot in common. They both liked comedies and action movies. They both hated onions (洋葱) on their pizzas. Neither of them could swim. Then, the emails from their parents arrived. The boys were brothers.
When their parents came to pick them up a few weeks later, the boys introduced their parents to each other.
“We want to stay in touch,” Chuck said.
“We’ll write emails,” Chan added.
“How about if we send the boys back here to camp every year, so they can spend every summer together as brothers?” Chan’s father suggested. Chuck’s parents agreed, and from then on, that’s what they did.

You don’t have to be old to be an inventor. Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle when he was just eleven years old. One winter day in 1905, after a day of play, he left his drink outside with the stir stick (搅拌棒), he found his drink was frozen like an icicle (冰柱). Frank tasted it and found it was delicious. And it became a hit with his friends.
When he grew up, Frank Epperson sold land and houses for a living. By 1921 he had to make a living for his wife and five children. But Frank never forgot the frozen treat (冰品) that he had discovered. He decided to continue with it. He soon started a business—selling the frozen treats in seven flavours (口味). He named the ice on a stick “Epsicle”. His children didn’t think that was a very good name. They called the frozen treat “Pop’s sicle”. The name was later changed to “Popsicle”. In 1924 Frank got a patent (专利) for his frozen treat.
During the late 1920s and the 1930s, the United States went through hard times. Many people lost their jobs. Twin ice pops (双棒棒冰) with two sticks were invented. They were just five cents and two children could share them.
Today millions of Popsicles are sold every year. They come in thirty flavours. The most popular flavour is cherry. Now whenever we enjoy ice pops in summer, we have Frank Epperson to thank.

Look around you—how many plastic things can you find in your house? Most homes today are almost full of plastics, from water bottles to clothes, chairs, and even computers. Regretfully, so are our rivers and oceans.
According to the report, about 583 billion plastic bottles were produced in 2021. That is 100 billion more than just five years ago. This year, five trillion (万亿) plastic bags were used. That was 160,000 every second. Americans alone use half a million drinking straws (吸管) every day.
However, very little of the plastic that goes into recycling bins (垃圾箱) can make it through the recycling process (过程). Experts (专家) think that only around 9% of plastic is recycled. About 16% is burned for electricity or heat. The rest ends up in landfills or bodies of water.
So how do you make sure plastic things you use are recycled? Begin by making sure the things you put in your recycling bin can be recycled. And in most cases, plastic things can’t be used again if they have more than one kind of plastic in them. That’s because some plastics can’t be mixed together.
How about those plastic things that are able to be recycled at a recycling centre? First, workers make sure that each plastic is clean. After that, the plastic things are made into small pieces. At last, they are melted (融化) and used to create new things. One of the commonly seen products is new plastic bottles. Recycled plastic can also be used to make clothes, pens, and building materials!
