Lots of people start their day with a cup of coffee. But as temperatures keep going up, they may have to give up the habit. In many coffee-growing areas, warmer weather has caused illness to coffee plants and made some places too hot for the plants to grow in.

Chocolate is also at risk. If the climate keeps warming up like this, cocoa plants could end up dying out by the year 2050.

Seafood is also an important food for the world. Sadly, with warming oceans and higher levels of CO₂, fish are becoming fewer in number. Every year, the harvest of fish drops by over 1000 million kilograms.

Climate change also affects crops, such as wheat (小麦), corn (玉米) and rice. They are all being threatened by changing temperatures and drought.

Farmers and scientists have been working together to prevent these foods and drinks from disappearing. They have had a lot of success, but it still can’t stop the harm that has been done. If we don’t stop climate change, we may have to find replacements for these foods and drinks in the future.

During this special festival holiday, everyone will wish you a great health and a lot of happiness. It’s so happy to get together with families and friends. Food is everywhere, whether family events or dinner parties. Having big meals so many days will make you unhealthy. Nothing is more important than the health. How can you get both of them?

Jack rubs (揉) his eyes when he prepares warm milk. Like other people looking after babies, he is tired. It is 5:30 a.m. and he hasn’t had much sleep. Jack sits next to a baby elephant, smiles and makes sure the baby elephant finishes its breakfast.

Jack is a keeper from an elephant rescue (救援) center. Unluckily, many elephants meet problems, so they need rescuing here. For one thing, hunters kill elephants for their ivories (象牙). For another, people build homes and plant fields where elephants used to live. Hungry (饿的) elephants walk into the villages and fields to look for food. They often cause serious damage (破坏), so farmers kill them. As a result, some elephants often have to leave their babies behind.

When a baby elephant loses its mother, it’s also in great danger. Because it needs its mother’s milk for about four years. Without milk, the baby has no chance to live. Research shows that elephants, like people, have feelings. If the mother elephant dies, the baby elephant often becomes sad and ill.

The center’s job is to raise these baby elephants and send them back to the wild step by step. First, keepers take turns looking after the baby elephants because they don’t want an elephant to depend on one of the keepers too much. Then keepers take the elephants into the forest. This is an important part of the process because the elephants need to learn how to eat in the wild and communicate with others. When an elephant is four and no longer needs milk, keepers move it to the wild. This makes elephants become brave. It often takes them eight to ten years to get used to the wild.

At bedtime, Jack has to lie down and sleep with his baby elephant. Jack says that when he leaves the babies, they cry. Does he need an alarm (闹钟) to wake himself up? “Oh, no,” he says. “The elephants are my alarms.”

Tom had a book in his hand and tears in his eyes. “What worries you, Tom?” asked Mrs. White.
